General,

You're a former media mogul, so you know as well as anyone... Coaches, sports writers and salesmen have their own language. It's called Exaggeration. Players are very rarely just decent or serviceable, they're either a "waste of paper" or they're "going to be playing on Sundays". Usually when they're recruited, the recruit is going to be playing on Sundays and by the time they quit football to join a rock band, they were just a waste of paper all along.

So I don't equate "WOW" to lazy thinking, so much as that there's a general feeling that for our program to get any positive traction, we're going to have to hire UP -- way up. I'd say Arkansas landing Petrino is a WOW hire, even for them.

For me, a WOW hire would be Jimmy Johnson-status coach (sure, I'm dreamin'). For the more realistic, a Bowden or a Neuheisal would constitute a WOW. But whoever it is, the longer this process goes on, I think the greater the chance for disappointment is.

Regrettably, it doesn't look like Orsini has another Coach Doh up his sleeves. I'm disappointed that he didn't have a contingency plan in place because even 6 months ago the odds were better than even that we'd have to find a new coach in December.

So in consideration of that, at least for me, the longer this fiasco drags out, the higher the bar goes, and the bigger the WOW will have to be in order to salvage the '08 recruiting class.

Let's face it, if we get a coach that takes us to a 7-5 season and a bowl game, that is pretty much a WOW hire from where we've been the last 20 years. Put it in perspective.

wouldn't the hiring of ANY head coach with Division I experience be a "wow" for SMU?

Forest Gregg was a "wow" hire at the time, but we haven't had one since.

Doherty was a "wow" hire.

If this thing had'nt dragged on so long, there are STILL plenty of guys out there who would constitute a "wow" hire as the next head football coach at SMU

I thought Pardee showed tremendous restraint by keeping it under a hundred.... Given the run and shoot offense..... Really.
