If we are putting an age limit on it, then we would automatically eliminate Barnett (61) and Schottenheimer (65) as well. I'd love to see Chow come here, and would actually consider this a WOW hire based upon his past successes and his reputation on the college level. From Wikipedia: Norman Chow (Chinese: 周å
Chow is 61. Think he's up for a rebuilding task such as what exists at SMU?
It's a valid question, and one that comes to my mind whenever Gary Barnett's name is mentioned here. Barnett is the same age. He lost control of the program at Colorado. Perhaps, as he claims, he didnt know about the drug and hooker parties for recruits, or about the rapes, but he should have. Maintaining discipline and control of a team definitely falls under the job description of a head coach, if he didnt know what was going on, he should have. Barnett has the best resume of all the speculated candidates, but does he still have the drive and desire to pull a team out of the mud? Or, is he just interested in cashing a few 1.5 million dollar paychecks before he retires? At Colorado it seemed like he lost interest, and let things get a bit too loose. He may want the job, but does he want to DO the job? They are two different things. Rebuilding SMU, regardless of who is hired, will be a 5-6 year job. Does any candidate want to take that on, when they are already in their 60's? Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
It's an interesting question. The flip side of the coin is this--if an older coach really is committed to coaching, he's more likely to stick around and seee the job finished than to jump to the next available gig, it seems to me.
It also only took Barnett 4 years until he had Northwestern in the Rose Bowl. This was before he had a name for recruiting. I bet the right person can get this ship turned around in 3-4 years. Just making a bowl game in the next year or two would do wonders.
Yeah, but after they get Vince Young's Autograph from him, they'll just commit to a Big 12 School. -CoS
