Re: 2 Point ConversionWhat I was trying to say was that MAKING the 2 point conversion is not as unusual as it used to be. Obviously, you do need a QB who can pass and receivers that can get open in tight man coverage.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: 2 Point ConversionNFL teams make the 2 pointer 33% of the time. I don't know the % for college teams.
Re: 2 Point ConversionWe are frequently going for (and missing) 2 points. It smells like panic. Like we will not get down there again.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: 2 Point ConversionIt's not a coin flip at all. If you have the choice of WHEN to go for it, you go for it later, not earlier. If you go for it earlier, and do not succeed, then you have taken your team OUT OF THE GAME. They now KNOW they are two scores away versus believing they still have a chance. Conversely, the defense of FSU then KNEW that SMU had to score twice, so playing possession/time consuming plays to run out the clock affects the available time we might have, whereas if we were only down by 8pts, they may still try to score, fearing that we might tie it up. Mistakes happen more often then. You go for 2 only when you HAVE to. We didn't have to at that point in time. THIS is the most confused part of football viewers that so many do not understand. All they see is the 'chart'.
Re: 2 Point ConversionOk, it's NOT sour grapes, but I will allow you that it is petty.
This is a pet peave of mine and I study 2 pt conversion 'decisions' intensely. This is the ONLY BAD coaching decision that I have harped on, because it is a TRULY bad decision. Had we been down by 16, then it would have been different. But down by 15 means we go for it LATER. You have to consider how your actions now affect your teams psyche and the oppnents decisions LATER, including their potential scoring options. Many times a team down will go for 2 in the 2nd or 3rd quarter - WHY? You just allow the opponents coaching staff to adjust their game plan accordingly. Say you are in the 3rd down by 15, you score 6 hten you go for it and miss. Now you are down by 9pts. There is so much time now, but lets say the opponent gets into scoring position once, and where they might have run riskier pass plays, they go conservative now, because they CAN, and just kick the field goal. You score two TDs and now are up by 2, a FG beats you now. The point is, being down by 9 in the 2nd or 3rd, even if you score 2 TDs, the opponent can game plan for JUST 2 FGs and still beat you. [ 11-03-2003, 08:24 AM: Message edited by: GoRedGoBlue ]
