they can always back out but I bet Charles heads for NFL after what happened to his brother at SMU.

BTW you want at least a partial reason for the parity in College Football this year-this is one significant factor. Schools like UT, USC, Ohio St. and Florida and the rest of the top teams are losing their best players making everybody else more competitive.

yep ran for two 200 yard games and something like 700 yards in his first 5 games as a freshman but hurt his back during his freshman year and was never productive after that. He had to give up football as a sophmore. He almost broke Eric Dickerson's single game record in his FIRST GAME. They took him out of the game just yards short of the record.

wasn't it in about 1998. The three great shooting stars of SMU History are

1. ShanDerrick Charles
2. Charles Waggoner
3. Pete Collins who died in a tragic offseason accident after being named a Freshman All-American at LB.

All 3 were as good as any who ever wore an SMU uniform as shooting star freshman.

He played in 2001 and 2002 and broke ED's single game rushing yardage against San Jose in 2001

Charles is the youngest of three boys. One of his brothers â€" ShanDerrick Charles â€" holds the freshman rushing record at SMU with 860 yards in 2001 (he replaced Craig James' record of 761 set in 1979).

ShanDerrick Charles would have been the kind of back we could have rebuilt our program around. He played the last 4 games of Cavan's final year in 2001. I remember we were tied with San Jose in the 2nd quarter when he came in and rushed for almost 200 yards. SMU went on to win that game 24-7. Then seems like he rushed for almost 300 yards the next week and SMU beat UTEP 40-14. His and Cavan's last game was against North Carolina at Carolina. UNC won 19-10 but ShanDerrick Charles rushed for over 90 yards and had a 27 yard TD run during that game.

If it's not SMU players (or at least players on a team SMU will face next year), it doesn't matter who's leaving for the draft. UT loses players early every year. Is ShanDerrick the only relevence here?

I thought Wayne Morris still held the freshman rushing record at SMU.
