"Best Available Coach in America"

Postby cs09viking » Sun Dec 16, 2007 1:15 pm

fellow ponyfans-

it bothers me that while on one hand he is trying to keep things unders wraps presumably attempting maintain some form of PR leverage isn't he doing the exact opposite by using this "nearly unreachable superlative".

OR i guess maybe the quote means, "the best coach available (to SMU) in America"....so i guess maybe he will be right...

thoughts?

I think Steve either needs a crash course in PR, he's a complete dolt, or he's got some serious cajones. Either way, with this quote, in less that 60 days (early February) he's either going to be elevated to superhero status, or he's going to be the university goat.

Given that, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and counting rosaries.

The last coaching search that took nearly this long resulted in Nebraska hiring Bill Callahan. Look how well that turned out. When the AD fired Solich, he said "I will not let this team gravitate toward mediocrity."

ADs who make statements like these usually end up getting fired. The bad thing with Steve-O saying this is that if his pick isn't stellar, he has made our university look very bad because it will look like no one wants to come here.

I hope I am wrong. Until this coaching search began, I thought Steve-O was pretty good. Although, I'm seriously starting to reconsider this. Just have to wait and see who he's got though. We could be surprised.

The "Best Coach in America" will be comparable to "The Best Wife in America". I have the best wife in America, the world as far as that goes. If you are married, it would be in your best interest to disagree with me.

Others may disagree but Orisin's job is not to get the best coach in America since that is not provable. His job is to get a coach that hopefully most of us will agree is an impact hire. Let the other schools say we did not get a good hire. Our new coach will be our "wife".

And for what it is worth, those of you set on Carroll, Spurrier, et al, you either are not married, divorced, or sorry you said your vows before you sobered up.

Guys, this is not about short term p.r., and never has been.

It's only about getting the very best long term coach.

Big difference.

Hold your fire.

i have no problem in this being a PR nightmare for a month or two if it yields a coach that can lead us to the promised land

What I think you fail to realize is that the PR is not the main issue, that is handled with a luncheon and confident press conference. The problem is that the hole is so deep here that without amazing recruiting over the next few years the hole will only get deeper and we will have another Cavan or Bennett.

is the hole going o be that deep if we get a guy like bowden? we need to relax about this whole thing. if we get a guy like the QB coach at N Texas's brother in law's room mate's uncle's drinking buddy, then we can say this whole thing was a disaster

with the amount of money SMU has in hand, the sparse number of openings that exist and the plenitude of good coaches that are still available and have expressed interest in SMU, we should come out fine in the end.

What I do realize is that what's going to get us out of the ditch we've been in for twenty years is a top drawer coach, and that's exactly what I expect us to land.

That was at NEBRASKA. Dont judge Steve based upon what the NEBRASKA AD did.
