I am not sure when freshman became eligible but I do not believe they were in Morris' first year (1972). Alvin Maxson led the team in rushing in 1972. They could have been, but regardless with Maxson leading the team I doubt that Morris set a freshman record.
Im only thinking its Morris because i remember going into the 2005 UTEP game, DeMyron Martin had a change to break the Freshman rushing record held by Wayne Morris...remember reading in the game program. DM didnt break it that day though. i still could be wrong...ill check
According to the Media Guide...go to SMUMUSTANGS.com, then football, then archives, then click on historical info. GO to page 120 on the pdf. the Freshman Rushing Record for Yards in a Season is 884. Held by Wayne Morris. 1972 Charles holds the single game rushing record for freshman.
Apparently freshman became eligible in 1972 and the M&M kids did good that year. I was in upstate New York at the time and being prior internet, I did not get good coverage of SMU at that time.
5 words that brought a smile to my face: "ShanDerrick Charles with the carry!" Man, I loved hearing that over the loudspeaker. Derail the Frogs!
The crazy thing about it was that his original injury was non football related, he hurt his back playing basketball in the offseason and reinjured it the following season and could never fully recover. His brother has more speed but ShanD was a much better running back.
