I just saw it too. They reported that the interview went well.
At least we got some national coverage.

Coker

Post by Texas Red »

That is very underwhelming. Coker doesn't exactly seem like the Best Ballcoach Available. Though he's certainly available, as is Phil Bennett, by the way. Maybe they are working a new deal with him. That would really be a "wow" candidate.

Is this the same Larry Coker that won a national championship at Miami? That is a wow to me. When was the last time SMU had a coach that won a national title? There are a lot of coaches coaching today that are great coaches that have never won a national title. I would take him in a heart beat.

Didn't he lose out on the Rice job to David Bailiff? So we are interviewing Rice rejects?

Yes, a former NC coach is a WOW hire...but theres going to be some fool on the board that will say Cokers NC is tainted because he won it with BDs players, which is BS, he still won a NC...

Coker would be a good hire here

I'm just relieved that it's a name I know! (and presumably is true because it's his boss, ESPN, that is reporting it). I'd be very happy to get Coker on a short term high reward contract.

It appears that Orsini is still shooting for the stars. Coker would be a WOW hire in my opinion. Especially if he could bring in some coordinators like he had at Miami.

I rewatched Orsini's press conference last night. I don't see how Steve Orsini can hire Larry Coker and be consistent with Orsini's comments about what he looks for in a coach. He specifically mentioned the conduct of the players on and off the field.

An .800 winning percentage (60-15) in college head coaching. If this does not constitute a WOW, what would?

maybe this is a good sign that the "no tainted past" blockade is crumbling?

also: news glorious news!

This does not sit well with me. Larry Coker ran a dominant Miami program into the ground. We can do better.
Back off Warchild seriously.

His recruiting classes ranked in the top 10 for all but his last season at Miami.

Hopefully he can recruit against the rest of the C-USA. I mean, he's not going to be fighting with the tops of the SEC and ACC for recruits anymore.

This would be a great hire: We would get a great coach, and Biggin could still say we got the scraps. Everyone wins.

Can we? We were the first to fire our coach, and we still don't have one. Who is better that is willing to take the job?
