Coker won a NC and won the NATIONAL coach of the year in '01. You don't just stumble upon honors like this. NO hack of a coach wins at that level and then fools the national media into believing much of it was due to his leadership. This is a guy who was good enough to run the #1 program in the country at one time...he can handle this job.

Forget Rice - how many of the right decisions have they made over the past 50 years, in regards to their football program. Now we trust their decision making in hiring Bailiff over Coker?

Most of you are seriously delusional if you think we can do better....he's not #1 on my dream list, but he insn't far down when speaking in terms of reality.

By the way, here are the last ten NATIONAL coaches of the year:

Peterson, Mack Brown, Tommy Tuberville, Nick Saban, Jim Tressel, Coker, Stoops, Beamer, Bill Snyder and Lloyd Carr.

And you guys think he's the one guy on that list that just fooled the world?? Those are some pretty damn good coaches. He's one of them.

Yep, he's fooled EVERYONE.

And don't forget, most importantly, he looks old.

at least hes not JoePa old and would have to coach from the press box

No, you would be the WORST HIRE.

JK, but I couldn't resist. Seriously though, the wringing of the hands is ridiculous. Given where we are, a coach who has won a NC, even with the baggage, would be damn nice.

2001 Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year Award
2001 AFCA Coach of the Year Award
2001 Big East Coach of the Year Award
2002 National Coach of the Year honor by Am. Football Monthly
2002 Big East Coach of the Year Award
2005 AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year

If the train stops with this guy, I'm fine with that. Not my first choice (because of his age and personality) but a HUGE step up from the product we had. Put him on a short leash if we think he fooled the rest of the football world.

Just a question.

Do we know that Rice passed on him or could he have passed on Rice? And I mean the truth with facts, not PR speak put out by either the school or the prospect.

look at the cold hard facts man, im not trying to stand up for LC or say i fully want him here but hes a great hire for this program...everywhere hes gone, HES WON...

you can put him in the same convo as Gary Barnett. BOTH proven winners and BOTH "ruined" programs...

Give me some evidence that he can build a program himself from scratch. don't tell me about Miami and being a bus driver there. Barnett has built programs, something you cant begin to say about Coker. You think he actually built Miami? He drove the bus, thats what he was a bus driver.

As part of his salary package, we could get a Hollywood makeup artist to do a pre-game makeover so he looks like Antonio Banderas. We win, the players get to rip off the face in jubilation. The new face of SMU.

Absolutely right. As I have said numerous times now...he was given the keys to a lamborghini and he drove it into a ditch. In our case, he would be given the keys to an 85' impala with no gas. He is also is probably too old and frail to even push a car into a ditch.

List of legit possible coaches I'd rather have than Larry Coker.

1. Barnett
2. Neuheisel
3. Bowden (either)
4. Mason
5. Applewhite
6. Gill
7. Fran
8. Dodge
Back off Warchild seriously.

he lobbied publically for the Tulsa job. And of course he wanted it. If he is considering us, you can deduce he wanted the Tulsa job.

Could have sworn I said Rice, but keep throwing those facts out there.

What many people over look is the fact that LC was the OC under Davis at Miami...im not going to explain it any further.

and i dont have any evidence he can but he did a great job as OC at the U and transitioned that team to National Championship status when he finally had his chance...

the guy can win, thats all im saying. and we need someone who can win!

Why did this have to wait until the bowls were underway or the NFL playoffs? Something is amiss. I think they struck out more than Babe Ruth.

I admit that I don't know much about Coker but I'm not upset about it. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

I was beginning to think they weren't going to hire anyone and resort to a coordinator so I got that going for me..

The guy has only had two sub.500 seasons anywhere (one OKSt another UM) in 28 years of coaching. If he is so terrible, he's one lucky sonofagun.

most people on this board dont care about cold hard facts. i.e. STATS, all they see and think about when Cokers name pops up is him driving the program into the ground and not being able to control his "thugs"

Once and for all. Everybody stop talking about HC stats at other schools. This is SMU. What a coach did prior to possibly taking this job does not mean crap, else we would have coaches beating our doors down thinking they can do the same. I appreciate all the research some of you do to get these numbers that mean nothing here, but please chill out on the stats. This is a special place, with special people and most coaches no that. It will take a special coach (they are all taken) and Coker, Graham, Dodge, Gill, Bowden, Barnett aint it. Orsini understands this why can't some of you. We may have to settle once again, but I hope not. Our coach is out there. I am still holding out for Bower or Moore since Haywood and Coach K. aint interested.
