I agree. I think if it is Coker it should have been done a long time ago but it would still be a great hire.

I asked earlier that we stop posting coaches past records at other schools. This is SMU. I am asking now that we stop posting coaches recruiting histories as well. This is SMU. A coach has not coached until he coaches at SMU. A coach has not recruited until he recruits at SMU. Stop comparing other schools to us. We are far better but distinguised in what we do and how we operate.
Let's get someone who is better than SMU's last coach.
Per bigdaddy's request, the past records shown below are those belonging to SMU's last coach and not someone who we could potentially hire from another school (which we wouldn't if their record looked like this - but let's not look at their record. Maybe we should look at their mustache?):
18 - 52 overall
1 - 11 last season

Big daddy are u really this ignorant??? Anytime you hire someone, whether it be coaches or paper salesmen you look at their past results. You cant be that stupid. No one is comparing the candidates past school to SMU. We want a coach who has a track record of success and the way coaches are graded is their win/loss record at other universities. Deal with it. Note: Ponyfans can we start a fake board for Bigdaddy to go and post rediculous things while we stay here.
Yes you are right. You do look at their past results in reference to what they can bring to your organization/situation. Wins and loses has nothing to do with it here. That works well with the BCS schools but not us. Track records has nothing to do with it here. We have no track record. If that is the case App. State would have never hired Jerry Moore, Boise State would not have the coach they have and we could go on an on. Go to the Tennis board, oibviously that is what you played an understand. You are messing with the Bigdaddy, keeping it real.

Coker does have some cred. But agree with the other posts, why now? It does not make sense in the timeline theory posed by Orsini. We could have been "wowwed" earlier with Coker.

Could have sworn I said Rice, but keep throwing those facts out there.
so you like Tulsa leftovers? at least the guy had a history in Oklahoma, so that made a degree of sense. Makes none for us.
Rice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coker and Bailiff were the two finalists for the Rice job:

Bailiff was offered the job and accepted. Coker wasnt offered. He couldnt have turned the job down, it wasnt offered to him.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.

Rice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My best friends Dad played at Rice back in the 50's and is heavily involved there. He wanted Coker over Baliff but Rice couldn't afford Coker.

What it does is get it down to what we really are looking for at this university and what we have been getting. It will not change until the culture changes. We can post stats, recruiting numbers and numbers to show how much we really don't know, but the fact is this. What is the admin and Orsini comfortable with? If it is Coker I will be shoked. If it is Graham, Barnett, Gill, Bowden I will be shocked. We missed our guys with Coach K and PJ. They were the perfect fit for our univeristy. Now we are looking for a puppet, or someone who can't find a job?

if you want answers jus like the other people who want to know, WHY NOW? with this coker talk, then yall are going to be stuck without answers because only Orsini and Turner know and they wont tell...

Another seemingly irrelevant point: Butch Davis selected Larry Coker to be his OC his very first year at Miami, a program that he quickly discovered would miss out on post season play in 1995 and lose 31 scholarships because of Dennis Erickson violations over the next few years. Coker wasn't a guy kept from an old regime or a replacement after a few failed coordinators, he was Davis' choice to build up his offense in his first coaching gig and so he brought him over from Ohio State. We think Orsini liked Davis so....
Also, there was a 100% graduation rate with that "thug" 2005 team...now about Davis not re-hiring Coker last year in UNC...that is suspicious

Right, unattractive coaches can't win in the big-time or even at SMU.

Because he wanted a Million dollars, not the peanuts Rice wanted to pay.
And there is no way they could have raised it for him. So why offer him if you know he is not going to work for free.
Don't get me wrong, I don't like the coker idea much either, but Rice couldn't afford him.

I'm sure the whole thing about driving a lamborghini into a ditch had nothing to do with it. I'm sure the melee with FIU also had nothing to do with it. I'm sure the multiple felony charges of his players also had nothing to do with it.

Think of what a guy like Coker could say to recruit while sitting in his living room:
1) I have won a National Championship and competed at the highest level at a private university.
2) I did so at a University with atrocious facilities and very poor home game attendance, so I can put SMU's program back on track.
3) You will get more playing time at SMU than (insert your pick of BCS school here).
4) I have coached the likes of Sean Taylor, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow, Ed Reed, Willis McGahee, Vince Wilfork, Antrel Rolle, Rocky McIntosh, Devin Hester, and Phillip Buchanan. If I can coach those guys, I can certainly teach you the finer points of the game.
Can anyone else that we could possibly interview say much of these same things? I don't think so. Is he the best in America? That's up for debate. But is he the best SMU could get, is he pretty darn good, and will he help SMU's program get to a higher profile? That's the real question.
The funny thing is that for the majority of the people on this board who say "Coker won a national championship with Davis' players" are probably going to be the ones to say "Wade Phillips did what Bill Parcells couldn't do with the same players" if the Cowboys win the Super Bowl this year.
