Coker will not be the next coachObviously, I am not Orsini and cannot guarantee this, but it seems highly doubtful Orsini would go here. Talk about scraps from the table. Orsini is hopefully looking for meatier scraps. The plug today on ESPN2 was simply that - a plug - it was more about Coker than SMU. Coker would make someone a good offensive coordinator and it helps him to have his name mentioned in connection with head coaching jobs. Someone was doing him a favor.
You can rest easy knowing Coker will probably not be coming to SMU. Although think of the coop if SMU were to get him as OC. That would be WOW. ![]()
Where is all of this anti-Coker sentiment coming from? The man would not be a bad hire for S.M.U.
I HATE the University of Texas!
Re: Coker will not be the next coach
Biggin, please go away. You post are after thought to everyone elses. Paul P. is our new coach. Announcement could come as early as tomorrow.
Re: Coker will not be the next coach
I tell you what - if Coker is named as HC, I will go away. If Pasqualoni is named tomorrow, you go away. (And I mean forever) Deal? ![]()
Explain to me how taking a team from a national championship in your first year to 7-6 and barely reaching bowl eligibility in your final year can deemed anything but a failure of the head coach.
I guess when you go 12-0, 12-1, 9-3 and 9-3 you are NEVER entitled to a bad year. I seem to recall a few times that Joe Paterno didn't do too well. In 1982 his team went 11-1 and won a national title; 2 years later they were 6-5. Just two years after that they went 12-0 and won another national title. Two years after that title, they went 5-6. In 2004 Paterno's team went a horrible 4-7; in 2005 they went 11-1. The difference: his school didn't have a knee-jerk reaction to one bad season like Miami did. If we judged every coach by one or two bad seasons, Tom Landry would have had a short tenure at the Cowboys. He didn't have a winning record until 1966 -- his 7th season. And what of Tom Osborne. Poor Tom couldn't win a national title until his 21st season as HC at Nebraska. In his 18th, 19th and 20th seasons he went 9-3, 9-2-1 and 9-3, respectively. Nebraska didn't send him packing like Miami did Coker; they kept him on, and in his 21st - 25th seasons he went 60-3 and won three national titles. Point: Miami didn't give Coker a chance to turn things around. I HATE the University of Texas!
Here's the problem with your comparisons.
Way back in 1966 Penn State went 5-5, the next year they improved to 8-2-1, then two back-to-back 11-0 seasons. JoePa proved he could coach Penn State before he ever had a bad year. He had 13 double digit win seasons (including 4 undefeated seasons and 5 one-loss seasons). Joe Pa didn't have a losing season until 1988 (his 22nd season). Tom Landry took over the Dallas Cowboys in 1960 and sported an 0-11 season his first year. The next few years he went to 4-9, 5-8, 4-10, 5-8, 7-7, 10-3, 9-5, 12-2, etc. He improved each year with the exception of the 1963 season and the 1967 season, but it's really hard to argue that the Cowboys did not improve under his watch. Finally, Tom Osborne did not get fired, he retired. How can you possibly make the comparison of Larry Coker and Tom Osborne, a man who never lost more that 3 games a season in his career and never won less that 9 per season. Again, Tom Osborne did not steadily decline in record like Larry Coker. Larry Coker got fired because he steadily declined Miami into mediocrity, regardless of conference change, and lost control of his team. Miami was the most undisciplined team in college football. They were an embarrassment.
Miami has ALWAYS been the least disciplined team in college football!
After playing in the National Championship game your first two years, there is nothing you can do but decline, and I would not consider going 11-2, 9-3, and 9-3 a steady decline. Yes, they only won 7 games his last year, but had a player get killed in the middle of the season.
I proposed a $37 bet with him that a news conference would not be held tomorrow announcing SMU's new head football coach. The crickets are deafening. ![]()
Because you're the worst disciplined team in college football you have to maintain the status quo? That's pretty pathetic. What would you call going from 12 wins down to 7 wins during your tenure? That sounds like a steady decline. It surely wasn't improvement. Any coach that has THIRTEEN players suspended for an on-field brawl where players where hitting their opponents with their helmets is awful. I understand that players have to make their own decisions, but the coach has to be able to control his team better than that. That's just embarrassing.
Again, even Barry Switzer had a 7 win season, and OU didn't have a player killed in the middle of that season. Do you think you could get a bunch of 20 year old kids to win all of their games after their friend had just been killed?
I'll give you the on-field brawl. But again, I have to ask, what the hell are our standards? We are the football program that got the death penalty. Now, we're upset because our AD interviewed a coach that was ranked in the Top 5 in the country 3 years, and in the Top 20 all but one year? Actually, if Steve-O hadn't talked to him, I'd be more upset. A team as bad as SMU that isn't willing to even talk to a coach who has won a national championship would have something seriously wrong with it. Besides, we have no idea what occurred in that interview. Steve-O might have decided he didn't think he could control the players. Coker might have blown him away. I can't imagine that Turner would let Coker come here if Gary Barnett wasn't acceptable, but supposedly we've interviewed him too, and I'm glad we did. I sure hope there is a coach out there that is willing to come to a football program with a past, and to find a good coach that is willing to come here, we may just have to match up with one that has a past.
excuses are like butt holes, everyones got one and thats how this story will end...theres always going to someone who will say that coker cant cut it as a HC...and there are some (very few) that will say hes a great coach...
