He's the one who took the talent Butch Davis couldn't win a national title with and won one with in his FIRST year. Got back to the title game again the next year too - lost that title by a touchdown to Ohio State. Won his first 25 games at Miami. Overall record of 59-15, a nearly 80% winning record. The cardinal sin that led to his firing: a .500 season in 2006 after he went 12-0 in 2001, 12-1 in 2002, 9-3 in 2004 and 9-3 in 2005.
No, he's definitely not the type of coach we at S.M.U. would want.

No, the cardinal sin was that he lost institutional control of the organization. Do you really want SMU to be associated with the guy whose team was taking off their helmets and beating the other team with them. I hope we aren't quite ready to sell our souls for a couple of wins. If this is our only option, I'd rather go for another up and comer Coordinator or I-AA coach and roll the dice.

Serious question. If anyone knows, did Coker have discipline problems with his team from the start (first season or shortly after)?

I thought a new head coach doesn't have the right to claim responsibility for the actions of his players until three years after he starts...

I was getting at that point. The team fight referenced above was in his 6th season, and I doubt those players were Davis holdovers. But I do recall some problems earlier in the decade that necessarily involved Davis recruits. Coker gets all of the blame but none of the credit. They're his players when they do something wrong but Davis' when they win a national title or go 12-1.

Listen, I know I really sound like a CokerHomer but he really isn't my top guy. I'm defending him more because I'm embarrassed/astonished at what visitors are seeing when they stop by ponyfans.com out of curiousity: SMU fans [deleted] and moaning about how our program would be doomed if we got stuck with a sucksatlife coach like Coker and how we deserve so much more.
Comforting signs from the Coker story (if true):
-It shows that we are still pursuing "name" coaches (I was scared the pond was dry) and maybe heading to our B-for-bad-boy list which presumably has guys like Bowden, Barnett, Neuheisel and Coker on it.
-Prior to November we were lamenting how our team looked like they didn't know where they were on the field, how they tackled like they were chasing ebola patients, how the play-calling was asnine, etc...what a refreshing and tremendous 180 degree change to worry instead about whether recruits will notice the shine from his NC ring or instead perceive him as too old, or too young, or not inspiring enough...right?
