Has anybody else noticed that we have effectively been coachless since Oscar made his appearance on our fair website? Is he the death knell of SMU football?

We could have landed Neuheisel. But oh well. You snooze, you lose. Typical SMU. Can't wait to hire the Assistant Coach at South Dakota Middle School. Much better hire than Neuheisel--he has a clean record.

Neuheisel is going to be a fabulous hire for UCLA. Pete Carrol and Neuheisel both in LA. Greatness.

Slow down, no way of knowing if he would come here. Just cause there was a small blurg saying Rick had a little interest doesn't mean he really wanted the job. Just an easy way to let other schools know he wants to be a head coach. I bet he is/was only interested in us once all the BCS schools have their coach.

It's going to be a great Los Angeles match-up! Too bad SMU dropped the ball and overlooked Neuheisel. He would have done wonders at SMU.

Especially, since he'll be unemployed after the last Ravens game this year.

If we had aggressively pursued Neuheisel back in October before the mass of coaching vacancies, I believe he would be our coach. But now that he has a taste of a BCS school interested in him, he will hold out.

Yes, but didn't Larry Coker play in the days of Doak Walker. We might be on to something here.

I think we're a second, third or fourth choice for a lot of these guys. They would rather walk into a UCLA, WVA, or Arkansas situation where they can pretty much know that they'll win right away and have a real shot at the National Title. At SMU, they know they have a massive rebuilding effort. I think that is why Orsini was telling everyone the New Year, because by then, one of these guys will be ready to sign with us, rather than working at CSTV. Neuheisel, Barnett, and others may have expressed interest in the SMU job publicly, but privately said, let me check out other options. I think Johnson was probably our first choice as well. Its kind of like asking out the hot chick. On Monday, she says no. On Wednesday, she'll say, that she needs to check her calender can you call back tomorrow. On Thursday, she says that she can go out because she's getting desperate. This is where we are as far as coaches are concerned. Some are beginning to get desperate and looking for a date even with the homely guy. Let's just hope that we don't find this next scenario: On Friday, she catches a cold, breaks the date, and you see her at a bar with another guy.

My impression of why we terminated Phil in October is to have a head start and securing a head coach before the major schools entered the head coaching market. If we had acted ASAP and offered the job with generous salary, there would be no issue as to where we are today. Now we have waited and we are competing with BCS schools. Our dollar amount may match our competitors, but our football reputation does not.
This statement is only geared towards those candidates who are not presently employeed (i.e. Neuheisel, Barnett, Bowden).

I think Orsini needed to raise a warchest first, and there had to be a vacancy to raise the warchest.
