Sherrington: Coker a Little Ridiculous....so are about half of the posters on this board. THE WORST CHOICE POSSIBLE
Pony Up: Do you think SMU will have a new football coach before spring practice? And what do you think of Larry Coker possibly coming to the Hilltop? Kevin Sherrington: Kinda looks a little ridiculous, doesn't it? I don't know what Larry Coker brings that some of the other names such as Glen Mason or Gary Barnett don't, if you want proven guys. And just because Miami is a small private urban school does not make it SMU. Not by a long shot. Still backing Jeff Bower, with Turner Gill the second choice.
Re: Sherrington: Coker a Little Ridiculous
Well obviously Sherrington is brilliant. What does Coker bring that Glen Mason doesn't? Ummmm....a successful record of coaching! Glen Mason barely has a winning record 123-121-1 and has more losing seasons than winning seasons. Mason brings nothing to the table at all. Gill has the potential to be a very good coach, but has yet to have a winning season and has a very short resume..........AND A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! In my opinion, Barnett would be a better choice, and I wouldn't mind Jeff Bower, but to say that he doesn't know what Larry Coker brings to the table that these other candidates don't shows what ABSOLUTE MORONS WORK AT THE DMN! No wonder Tom Shatel left Dallas for Omaha!

[/quote]...........All that is needed to be said.
I think you're missing the most important thing he said.
Basically just because Coker could win at Miami (where top recruits WANT to go and there is a tradition of winning in the last 20 years) doesn't mean he can win at SMU.
Agree with sentiment that Bower is better...not so much Turner Gill behind him...don't really care.
"Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
Larry Coker took over as Head Coach at Miami when they had one of the most talented teams and the best program in the country. Sure Coker had success at first as most every coach in the country would have under those positive circumstances, but Coker left with the program in deep trouble last year.....This year, the destroyed Miami program had its 1st loosing season (5-7) in almost 30 years. Since Miami was Coker's only Head Coaching job, to take that great program down like he did is nothing SMU should be interested in............Truthfully, if he really did interview for our job, I am amazed and concerned about the judgement of why ? All I can say is Coker must have a great agent with some real good bs about how he built a national championship team at miami or something false like that......Coker is just not a Head Coach.
Agree. Well said.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Nothing like being apart of the "Subdivision" of college football. Sort of being a second class citizen, if you will. BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Football Bowl Subdivision is the new name for Division I-A. UT, LSU, OSU, OU, etc. are all in FBS.
I am one of the more positive guys on this board, but frankly if Larry Coker is really a serious candidate for our head football coach job, than who ever is really in charge of this hire is NOT doing their homework.....They would have to be just listening to marketing people and coach's agents and not understanding the FACTS about these candidates.....We need a proven coach who can "manage a team." That is the job of a Head Coach. Larry Coker did not do a good job of that at Miami....Just look at where Miami was when he started, then look at where they were when he left ? The truth is in the declining record of Coker.
Coker or Bennett? Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Why is that moron emmitt posting on ponyfans again? oh yeah, he is obsessed with SMU, there can't be any other reason...right?
Miami was Thug-U long before Coker took over and will be long after he has been gone. I'd say he left it exactly as he found it. As for the 7-5 season, there are maybe 2-3 coaches in the country who could get their team to bounce back after one of their players was killed in the middle of the season--if anyone could. These are a bunch of 20 year old college kids, not war-hardened marines. Dennis Erickson started Thug-U, Butch Davis continued it, and so did Larry Coker. If Dennis Erickson is good enough for ASU and Butch Davis is good enough for North Carolina, why are you too good for Larry Coker? Who the hell do you think we are anyway? We are also one of the dirtiest programs in the histor of college football, so I don't think you should be throwing such big stones. I personally do not think Coker is the best fit for this program, but if he is the man we can get, he's a hell of a lot better than anyone who has been here for a long time.
that's not saying much. at this point, only bigdaddy would be a worse choice. maybe gambino ![]()
Terry Bowden took over a team that went 10-11-1 in the two previous years at Auburn.
Butch Davis was 20-5 in the two years before Coker took over. In Bowden's 5+ years, he was 47-17-1. In Coker's six years, he was 60-15. Coker finished in 2006. Bowden finished in 1998. I'd pick Coker over Bowden, and give him a good OC (Malzahn -- dream pick) like Schiano.
