You are correct and he was misled by the folks at Bama. I don't necessarily blame him for leaving...just the way he did it and how left the players.

I was speaking with a current SMU football player Friday night and asked him how the search was going. He told me that they would know today who the new coach will be. I told him that there was quite a bit of talk about Fran and he said that he had been hearing that same name within the locker room and from folks affiliated with the program.
Interesting post on there. Probably has zero credibility though.

I hear you Reed. I can't argue with you on that point.
If Fran hadn't conducted that stupid e-mail thing he would probably still be at A&M. Even though he went 7-5 he did beat UT 2 times in a row. The last game showed what the O could have been the entire season. He got fired over the e-mail fiasco. Fran is not perfect. He definitely should have done some things differently.
Barnett has a lot more baggage than Fran. Unless they hire Chow I don't know what else they have in mind.

I hear you too...and I am not saying Fran wouldn't be successful at SMU (he might even be the best coach for job). Given what we've seen from him, I just question his character and would be hesitant to "buy in" if I were in SMU's shoes (regardless of his past with TCU).
There was a statement earlier in this thread that our coaching search was going badly. If you look at it objectively, it is going as one would expect.
Steve O could have hired Fran or Coker weeks ago, but he was trying to get a higher profile coach. Johnson was of a higher profile. The Air Force coach was of a higher profile. Personally I am glad neither of them accepted our oververtures
Another factor may be that Turner had a hand in the early candidates. It appears the he was looking for a military academy type who puts out winning programs with “modelâ€

Hire Fran NOW!
This guy is by far the best coach of your given options. While he struggled against OU and UT, he is still a good coach and excellent recruiter. He is also great an reviving pride in a program's players and fans.
In Fran's first season TCU was 6-5, we were shocked to see our team make it to a bowl game for the first time in 4 years. Then we went out and beat USC.
From that point on people were believers and the players expected to win. He formed new cheers and lots of new traditions, which we still use today.
He is the right guy for what SMU needs, a cardiac defibulator of the entire program. Oh yea, he can also recruit Texas about as well as any guy on earth.

"TCU is the model SMU aspires to be. If that offends those on The Hilltop, then so be it."

enough already, some of you need to get over yourselves. All of this talk that "we can do soooo much better than (insert name - Fran, Coker, Barnett, etc)" of "If we wanted (insert name here) we could have signed him 3 weeks ago." We are where we are. Not all thing have gone as planned or gone well for that matter, but you have to look at the situation for what it is and execute based on what the options are today. So let's go get the best coach available today. SO, ingore the blogexperts and Monday morning quaterbacks who will question and tear apart every decision, and close the deal so we all can get down the road.
