Fran beat Texas 2x recently too. And A&M's been bowling too! They will do well for the next few years with Fran's recruits.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what did Coker build, exactly.

A reputation for trashing a championship caliber program. If that's what works for ya....

He was the OC at Miami under Butch Davis, so he is partially responsible for putting together the team he took over.
However, that is why Barnett would be better than Coker in my opinion.
Fran didn't BUILD anything either. One good season at NM. That's it.
Didn't stay long enough to BUILD anything at TCU (3 years) or Alabama (2 years). So the Fran has a history of BUILDING programs argument is flawed as well.

Shame on him for being successful too quickly.

Exactly the point with Coker as well.
All these people are railing on a guy who won a national championship with someone else's players (who he had recruited and coached previously) but think that Fran's success and Slick Rick's success with someone else's players was somehow magical.
Bob Stoops didn't win his NC with his own players either. He probably wouldn't be acceptable to us either.

RC Slocum did a lot better at A&M than Fran did. And over a lot longer period of time too.

You seem to be missing the point that he made Miami worse and worse during his tenure until he was finally fired. Argue with that one.
Fran made UNM better, TCU better, 'Bama better. A&M, not better, but not worse. They are in about the same state as he found them, which is immeasurably better than SMU.

You have to wonder how good Fran would have been if he ever had opened up his offenses. He's a very stubborn guy. Would he change if he were here? Would Steve O require him to run a more imaginative scheme here If hired?

Matty Bell was the head coach at TCU before taking the head coaching job at Texas A&M and then went from A&M to SMU. That would be "Kennedy/Lioncoln"ish if Fran came to SMU. Matty was fired at A&M, though. Why? He couldn't beat SMU!!!

12-0, 12-1, 11-2, 9-3, 9-3, 7-6...At least 9 wins in 5 out of 6 years pretty much makes me want to vomit too. Seriously? Are we gearing up for a national championship campaign in the next three years? Did I miss something? I thought our immediate goal is to not suck as bad as 47% of the DI-A teams do on a semi-regular basis. If any current or former HC of a top 25 team (not to mention Nat. Champ) came to SMU and impressed Orsini enough for him to place his job on the line for him...I'd be okay with them. My stomach turns when I think about Fran coming to SMU on some levels, and I also would worry about Coker if he came, but either way I'm adopting an "SMU will quickly show us what they really can do" attitiude. Lets give Orsini the benefit of the doubt that he's not an idiot, lord knows he's had enough time to brood over his decision and there isn't a knee-jerk excuse any longer.
