The Orsini ProbationTop Recruits Making Other Plans(Updated)

Postby Stallion » Sat Dec 15, 2007 7:16 pm

I got 9 SMU targets (including 3 former commitments) now since early December that have made other commitments. SMU has been on all these kids early and often and offered all except for Dustin Bell(the brother of Derrius Bell)

1. Corey Fuller (5.5) TCU (former SMU commit)
2. Jarrett Ben (5.4) Rice
3. John Shorter (5.3)North Texas
4. Lonzee Range (5.4)Iowa St.
5. James Hamilton (5.5)North Texas
6. Dustin Bell (5.6) Kansas St.
7. Chandler Spence(5.4) Louisiana Tech
8. Ladarrious Gunn(5.2) Idaho (former SMU Commit)
9. Nick Sampson(5.4) UTEP (former SMU Commit)

THESE WERE ALL OF THE BEST RECRUITS LEFT ON SMU'S TARGET LIST. 7 would be the highest rated recruit on our commitment list-another would be equal. In fact there are no recruits on SMU's offer list who are still considering SMU who are rated above 5.3.

What do you what me to do about it? I have no money, and therefore have no ability to force Orsini to hire anyone. I could potentially stage a violent overthrow of the athletic department, but that would just end up with me in a prison with a severely bleeding [deleted]. No thanks.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Our program can not have a "target list" without coaches in place to construct that list. To wit: if an option coach comes in, SMU suddenly recruits different RBs and QBs, and many of the names that were on the previous regime's wish list become afterthoughts at best.

Maybe these guys are on Rivals' "target list" — or perhaps yours — but neither means a thing until coaches are in place.

yeah well the point is there will only be scraps left on the table no matter what offense is run. Any reasonable person can see that.

Well for what it is worth, we were declining in our recruits for a while and it would have continued this year anyway. The key now is to salvage what we are able and hope that whomever we hire can stop the bleeding next year. What is hurting this year is the inability to get in on any JC help which is desparately needed.

Recruits are recruits wherever they may come from. The key to any athletic department is to obtain the best athletes possible regardless of the type of offense you are running. And since PJ is at GT we don't have to worry about the broken bone. If we are losing recruits because we don't have a coach, that is an issue. We consistently make history at this school. Has this ever happened in the history of D1 football?

You are probably right, but I guess that somewhat may depend on who we hire, correct?

Now with the commitment of Chandler Spence to Louisiana Tech there are ZERO players rated above 5.3 that are actively considering SMU based upon Rivals' SMU offer list.

Commitments are only that. Things could change quickly with the right coach whoever that may be. Somehow I believe Orsini does understand the impact of the delay on recruiting but has decided this risk is worth the delay. I guess we will just have to wait and see how this plays out.

the only Coach I see making up significant ground in 3 weeks left of recruiting is Franchione-he has a Coaching Staff in place at A&M who are just about all getting pink slips from what I hear. Franchine and staff have watched these kids, talked to these kids, recruited these kids, know their Head Coaches, met their parents, had them to Aggie camps. Coker is quite frankly going to have difficulty getting a staff together in time to be effective in Texas recruiting.

And I would hope his kid would stay at Blinn rather than joining him. I would like to see a pipeline built to funnel kids to SMU between the father and son relationship.

How can a pipeline be built between Blinn and SMU when SMU won't take all the credit hours? Broken model.

I agree with "The Stal" Fran probably is the way to go if we are trying to recoup recruits. This would definitely be to our advantage. We shall see and I don't think it will be long...Go Mustangs!!!

I am blindly hoping that is a subject being discussed during this marathon hiring process. It seems that past hires have all been accompanied with some slight loosening of restraints. Again, it is a blind hope.
