Anybody ever pan fry a steak?I don't have a grill at the ThadPad... and the last time I used the oven to broil something (pork chop) I set off the fire alarm.
Cooked a steak last night.... It being around 9 in the evening, I didn't want to potentially scare the neighbors if they could hear it, so I pan fried the puppy. Not bad at all. Basically, just applied a rub.... threw some olive oil in the pan turned it up high, let it get hot, threw the steak on it. Shortly there after flipped it, turned it way down. left it on that side for a couple short minutes longer then the other side. Flipped it tot he original side as I pulled out the plate dumped on the sides, and then slapped the steak on the plate. It was not bad at all. Actually, amazingly good. I decided it was worth a shot after I saw Dexter cook up a steak in a pan a couple episodes a go. Just because Dexter does it doesn't make it right. Or does it? I may be on a path to killing criminals, but only if they deserve it. (For those who haven't seen Dexter or have no idea what I am talking about.... watch it! Watch it now!) .................... So... Anybody got any good tips on cooking up a steak without a grill? I set off my fire alarm anyway last night, so I may cook the other steak (I bought two) in the oven. The DMN had a good steak preparation guide a few months back that listed an excellent oven preparation technique. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh

Hey - I think he might be right. Like I said, my steak last nigh was darn good. Personally, I always think of cooking meats like that old Parcells line from his Patriots/Jets days... "How do they expect you to cook the dinner if they won't let you shop for the groceries." You buy the right meat, the meat that looks good, and more than half your job is done. Of course you can buy average meat for use with marinade, but still you get better results with better meat. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh

Thad--
Drop $30 on one of these guys, next best thing to a grill. A little non-stick spray, salt and pepper on the steak, and your good to go. http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodde.asp?SKU=199485 Make sure you preheat it for a few minutes for the best results.
Oh heck yeah, JT!! That will be in my apartment soon. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh

Your original post on this thread is almost exactly the way I've been doing it in my apartment for years Thaddeus. Only thing is, I don't turn it up so high in the beginning. Ponyplayer is correct though, it does make your apt. and clothing stink to high heaven for a couple days. I am lucky that Mrs. KS actually likes the smell. (?) Maybe I will have to try one of these jtstang-endorsed models...
Okay, I'll respond in earnest tomorrow (err... technically later today), but just got back to the ponderosa as it were, so this jumped out a me...
