Should we be rooting for a Hawaii loss???

Postby ponyinNC » Thu Dec 27, 2007 11:46 am

I believe JJ is Orsini's man, 2nd choice all along to PJ. That being said, should we be rooting for Georgia to blow out UH??

Pure speculation on my part, but if Hawaii pulls the upset, does JJ maybe get an offer from the NFL? Are the powers to be at UH forced to "pony up" and pay the man what he is worth, making it a competitive bidding match b/w them and us?? Does he stay and continue on with what he has built??

With a UH loss, he may realize this is as good as it gets at UH (Brennan is gone, they have poor facilities and low budget) and he is ready to move on...

I like to root for the non-BCS teams usually, but may be hoping for a Dawgs beat down on Jan 1.

And for all the naysayers that will point to JJ's recent non-interest statement regarding SMU, spare me. Every coach preparing for a bowl game will say exactly that.."I am only interested in (insert opponent team name here)." He will be coming to SMU for an interview after his season ends. Put it on your calender.

He'd better get his butt over here fast. The last part of the recruiting season is just about to start!

I would think if Hawaii upsets Georgia, the bigger risk is that UH will cave to his requests and give him a fat raise or make a financial pledge to improve facilities, thereby reducing our chance of stealing him.

If, in fact, Jones is Steve-O's guy.

My guess is that SMU should be pulling for a Hawaii victory for the reason that Jones will have, essentially, achieved everything he could at Hawaii with a win. He'd have an undefeated season and a win in a BCS bowl. The likelihood of playing in the BCS title game at a non-BCS conference is so small that realistically, a win against UGA (which would make me happy to no end) would be the pinnacle of achievement at Hawaii. As such, it's possible (probable?) he'd want to move on to another challenge and SMU may be the place to do that.

Georgia Southern comparison ahead, feel free to skip

In January of 1981, UGA, behind Herchel Walker, won the national title. That same year, Georgia Southern decided to resurrect football after disbanding it during World War II. Erk Russell, the legendary defensive coordinator behind the Junkyard Dawgs, was ready for a new challenge as he'd achieved all he could as a coordinator at UGA. So later that year, he agreed to become head coach at Georgia Southern, where they didn't have a field, practice facilities or even a football (they had to run across the street to Kmart to get one for the press conference). Eight years later, he retired after winning three national titles and completing the first 15-0 season in college football history (since equaled by Marshall).

The point is, if Hawaii wins, both men will have done all they could at their respective school and may want to take on something different. It's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities.

If it comes down to money or facilities...
Hawaii can't compete with SMU.

Jones' most recent comments sound to me like he wants an NFL job or at least is using that as more leverage to get the Rainbow Warriors to fork over more dough and fix the facilities..............

I bet that last part is most accurate: he wants to stay in Hawaii (who wouldn't?) but wants better compensation and a facilities upgrade.

They are no longer Rainbow Warriors. Just Warriors. It caused confusion with the Gay Rights folks. No joke.
