Let's say we come away with a pretty good hire. It is unlikely they'll have time to sign many decent players. Also, our team should be worse overall (defense!) next year. Better X&O's cancel out worse talent, we end up with the same 1 win record in '08.

Since we didn't recruit anyone this year, we'll have zero help or just true-freshmen, and lose more players. Our record might not go anywhere again.

Can a "big name" coach overcome two 1-win seasons when it comes time to recruit that 3rd recruiting class? How many bad seasons can a "name" coach work the "come build something new" recruiting line? 2? 3?

Time was as crucial in this hire as is who is the head coach. And we have blown the time part. Orsini has likely overthought this thing and past up a lot of good coaches in the process. June Jones in a week versus several over qualifed coaches two months ago..............I think the choice is easy.

Do you think it can be done in a week? He still needs to interview for the job and get final approvals from the committee, faculty, administration, etc. That process alone COULD take several weeks. Plus the new coach will have to assemble a staff, determine the team's pressing needs (everywhere on defense), try to target what recruits are left that might have an interest, setup visits, etc. Further, if its June Jones, he might have to go back to Hawaii to pack up and finish any business that he needs to get done before moving to Dallas. The flight time back and forth from Hawaii is 8 hours each way. If he has to make more than one trip that will be several days just in travel alone! This year seems pretty well lost to me. Time to start recruiting for 2009's class and we are already behind on that!

But maybe I can answer with I would rather be in a position of worrying about what a "big name" coach can do vs. a "no name" coach.

Whether it's a big name coach or a no name coach it's never going to turn around until the SMU administration and faculty loosen the leash a bit. Look how many years it took for Ron Meyer to turn around the program. It took him over 4 1/2 years to get to a bowl game and he had us on the fast track with cash, cars, and scholarships. Imagine how long it will take without booster assistance.

The MODEL does need to change but PLEEZ do not bring up the money, cars ( and do not forget the FINE women ) that SMU had at the time.

I say this pretty much in jest. SMU needs more degree majors and to abide by the letter on the law as written by the NCAA. No other hoops and the Faculy could loose some of the piety. ( Not towards GOD but for themselves )

SMU is a good school. A kind of bubble school. If we want to exclude many more things we will be a Bowl Sub Conference School. Div II or III.
