Things do get better at some point....right?

Postby 03Mustang » Thu Dec 27, 2007 9:48 pm

Watching the Holiday Bowl....all of a sudden, there's a clip of McMahon beating us....then I look at the DMN blog and apparently Texas just surpassed our record of the fastest scoring drive in bowl history.

We have no coach.

We went 1-11 last year

I haven't seen a bowl game with SMU in it since I was 3 years old

This nightmare ends at some point, right? Surely there is some sort of cosmic balancer that is going to tip back into our favor at some point....right?????

I can't imagine those of you that have suffered for 20 years now...its been about 5 years now that I've been a big SMU fan and all this is just killing me.

I guess hope is all you can have at this point. Well, back to the bottle I go...

Unbearable pain after 20 years

Postby Sam I Am » Fri Dec 28, 2007 12:42 am

After 20 years, the pain becomes unbearable as witnessed by the backbiting on this board. It is made even worse if you have been around during the great 80's or even further back with the Doaker. Yes, this must eventually end, but will I live long enough to see it?

A lot of us have suffered in pain for a long time with SMU Football. This time of uncertainty is one of our many low points these past 20 years. There will come a day when Mustang Nation will rise again even if the best we can do is the Liberty Bowl. When that day comes, I might almost miss the pain I have felt these past 20 years. I say that because you live with the suffering so long that you almost miss the pain. Winning is euphoric, yet it is often so unfamiliar you don't know what to do when it rolls your way. Few have endured the punishment we SMU faithfull have had to experience.

Sometimes I lay awake at night and wonder what it would take to get us back into the Top 25. Has every coach from Gregg to Bennent hit the same wall at SMU? Could a new generation of boosters help shape SMU athletics and the perception of SMU nationally? Sometimes I ask myself is there something I could do besides give my money to the Mustang Club to get us back into the Top 25? The answers to these questions are Yes, No, and No because until Steve Orsini got a 10 million dollar kitty, the leaders at SMU have been to chicken to play with the big dogs.

The answer lies in the new head coach. If SMU allows the new coach to operate freely with recruits, boosters, etc. then we will be back into the Top 25. If the new head coach is handcuffed like Gregg through Bennett was, then we will get more of the same.

More simply put. Ron Meyer came to SMU when they pretty much stunk in 1976 just like we stink now in 2007. If Ron Meyer came to SMU in 1976 and had to deal with the restrictions and ridiculous oversight of the faculty we have today, you would have never heard of the Pony Express.

Atleast you've seen one.

My first SMU game (granted I don't remember one thing about it) was when I wasn't even a year old and it was SMU's first game back from the death penalty. Joy for me.

You've got something to look forward to. Win or lose, they're fun.

Now I'm starting to feel old. But, yes SMU will win again; probably very soon. Getting Orsini on board signaled that the "restrictions" will be loosened. In C-USA, with a good coach, anything is possible. This hire, if it is a good one, should be the turning of the corner.

And yes, the games this year were pretty entertaining despite the record. They're not that far away. Imagine this board talking about the bowl game that SMU will play in. People will have all new things to complain about.

Yes it will get better. Despite what the chicken dicks on this board would lead you to believe (Stallion/biggin), SMU has a very bright future. Of course getting the right guy as head coach will be paramount in getting us to where we all aspire to be (Top 25). But I've always maintained that SMU is one of the biggest sleeping giants in all of college football. If the right guy can come in here, energize the program, recruit like hell, and actually win a few games, I truly believe the sky is the limit. The success TCU has enjoyed will pale in comparison to what SMU could achieve.
Back off Warchild seriously.

However, Meyer came into an entirely different situation and while he got us to the next level, some corners were cut to say the least. But he did turn the program around, but it took a couple of years even then. He was hired in January and had a rough first year. After that things moved quickly.

Actually they did not move that quickly. Just seems that way after 20+ years of wandering in the wilderness.

Things will get better if SMU changes its model in which it competes. It is as simple as that.....
