Best SMU Football Memory?

The Greatest Football Game I've ever witnessed-SMU v. Texas Tech in 1982. No game comes close to gut wrenching, hair pulling exasperation followed by triumphant euphoria. The greatest field spectacle ever at an SMU game in Lubbock Texas no less. The mob scene from the SMU 15 where Blane Smith was being hugged while rolling on the field all the way to the other end zone where Bobby Leach was being mobbed while various other players were running around like it was Christmas will never be forgotten. Better than Jack Dale's heart sunk realization that "he could go all the way" on the Radio Newtwork that's for sure..

1983 Cotton Bowl against Pitt. Senior year at SMU. Unknown to me at the time, my future boss was a hotshot defensive player for Pitt. He has still not recovered emotionally from their loss.

The 1983 Cotton Bowl was a big kick for me as well but as the years go by one of the earliest SMU games I can vividly remember was the 1974 18-14 upset of Texas A&M.

I was 13 and a huge fan of Wayne Morris, Dave Bostic, Oscar Roan and Large Louie Kelcher and it was the first football game I actually sat down and watched all the way through without jumping up and running off to explore the Cotton Bowl or buy a Dr. Pepper. Something about the way Ricky Wesson ran that Wishbone.

It was a couple of days after Thanksgiving and we had about 30 family members in the Cotton Bowl for that one. Just a great memory.

Wow...my first SMU game was my most memorable SMU game. It was SMU vs. Vanderbilt, 1990. We won the game and I thought it was going to be a great year and a great 4 years. Not to mention, a girl I was dating from close to my home town came over to watch and after the game we "christened" the old dorm room at Cokrell(Yes, I know how to spell, but apparently the name of a frosh dorm is taboo)....back when they were small than a vegetable crisper in your a fridge. Ahhh...just thinking of that made my year...

1992 -- Homecoming game versus Houston. The seniors made it a point to beat the living snot out of the coogs in revenge for the 95-21 game. We won 41-16 and SMU football was back baby...at least we thought so. The best part about that game was when we KNEW we were going to win midway through the 4th After uh missed on a desperation 4th and forever, Jimmy Klinger was pelted by a rain of the little red footballs given away earlier that day.

Honorable mention:

1992 -- Beating Arkansas at LR
1993 -- Baylor rolls without throwing an effing pass.
1994 -- 5th ranked A&M ties the hell out of SMU at the Alamodome
1995 -- Ramon goes out on the first play of the season vs Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. We hold on to beat em with a goal line stand.
1995 -- We have the ags beat at Kyle Field, if not for a phantom PI call and Albert Connell's out-of-bounds TD reception with 8 seconds to go. Before that, you could have hear a pin drop.
1996 -- Beating Arkansas at Fayetteville
1997 -- Beating Arkansas at Shreveport.
2000 -- Ford Stadium opens with win over Kansas. 109 at Kickoff!
2002 -- We set the grassy knoll on fire with a pregame fireworks show in front of Roger Stauback and Navy.
2005 -- Knocking the frogs back to reality on National TV.

I am an old guy who was there. There is no way to express the excitement on campus the week before the game or for people now to understand how big it was on the national sceen. Doak was injured and out for the game and Kyle Rote made up the difference. We lost in the final minutes 27-20, but no one who was there will ever forget that game!

Even though I attended SMU during the Pony Express days, I still think the 78 season was the most memorable. Thanks to Brad Thomas and Russ Potts they created, "Mustang Mania". Going to the Cotton Bowl and seeing 50 to 60,000 people for a game was exciting(I know most of them recieved free tickets, but it was still exciting). Mike Ford, Emanual Toblert would light up the sky with passes. An early form of the spread offences of today. It was a fun time for SMU football.

Another memory comes from the 1981 season, I believe. SMU traveled to A&M. After a SMU touchdown the men cheerleaders ran onto the field to spell SMU. At A&M, that is a no-no. The [deleted] Aggie Cadet of the day charges the field with his sabre drawn and pointed at my franternity brother, David Schmidt. Luckly, cooler heads prevail and this idiot Aggie put the sabre away. The Aggie Cadet was escorted off the field, to a standing ovation by the Aggie faithful of course.

I do not know what happen to the Aggie Cadet, but he reminded me of, Douglas C. Neidermeyer from "Animal House". What a tool......

1989 -- first year back. We were getting creamed by UT at the old stadium on campus....forgetting the name......

A UT lineman just goes out to embarrass our defensive lineman, driving him back 20 yards well after the play is over. The crowd started to boo, and even the UT fans were shaking their heads in disgust....

SMU guy gets up, and pops the UT player straight in the gonad area. The UT player grabs and drops and the stadium goes wild as the penalty flags start flying......

So that's how they did it? You mean Potts & Co. didn't put all those people in the stadium by raising prices to everything surrounding the event, or by adding to already restrictive policies or by seeing to it that support staff were less than accomodating to all those people at the game? How 'bout a half baked marketing campaign...did Potts & Co. put Mustang Mania banners up around 75? Probably around I-30 and Fair Park too, right?
