I know his name has been mentioned in the past but a lotta
love on the radio today for the former SMU asst. coach.
Mentioned not only as a great candidate for UT Def Coor but also SMU head coaching job .

Mike Zimmer's name also thrown out as someone who would be a good DC @ UT. I mentioned his name a couple of weeks ago as a possible HC candidate @ SMU.

How's this for a new wrinkle? Just got an e-mail from a friend of mine who has been a sportswriter in Louisiana for almost 20 years:

"LSU is trying to get him as their defensive coordinator, but some folks are saying he's waiting to interview with SMU for their head job."

I have heard he is one tough son of a gun and a very good coach.

Is that so he can demand more pay from LSU?

I don't think you can equate a DC job with a HC job. He does have SMU connections '89-'94 and everyone thinks he's a great DC; however. he's 58 and no one has offered him a HC job.

He is acting HC for GT's bowl game.

If he is who we've been waiting for, we should have an Orsini nut kicking contest. Good coach, but come on. We could have had him the minute Johnson signed at GT. He may end up our coach, but it would only be because others ahead of him bowed out.

He's only 50 and knows his way around here-a definite plus. Imagine us with a defense-could it be?!

Uh, weren't these things being said about 5 years ago about a certain former coach? Tenuta would be a terrible choice....we need someone that has run a team on gameday before, not a career coordinator.

mryrdel - I am sorry but I don't read every post on this message board. I hadn't read this one. But I think others would like to know what I heard anyway.

A fine candidate for Quote Of The Day. And how do I sign up for the contest?

No, not really...

so where are the 10 or 15 of you who lined up to say Turner Gill wasn't qualified for this job? Gill has D-1 head coach experience. Not seeing how Tenuta fits the bill.

Gill would have been a far better hire than Coker, Fran, Tenuta or anyone who seems to be in the mix. Should have thrown some cash at him 6 weeks ago. The hits just keep on comin.
