Jon Tenuta

Tenuta is a phenomenal coordinator, but he had it written into his contract at Tech that he didn't have to recruit. He's a stern guy, not much of a fundraiser or schmoozer and doesn't really recruit
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

if Tenuta, Gailey, Johnson and Coker have really been under consideration, then we've got someone who doesn't understand what SMU needs to turn this program around. I sense a coach'em up philosophy which will end in another disaster. These guys are more of the same. None of these guys will inspire the alumni, put a new image on a downtrodden program or are likely to be able to recruit the type of talent this program needs to shed 20 years of this same old crap. I agree Turner Gill would be a better hire. I know you aren't a fan of Doherty but that's why he was hired, that's what he has attempted to do and I think SMU fans generally like the hire. Look for the same qualities that SMU looked at in hiring Doherty. I submit that Barnett, Franchione, Gill, Graham, Neuheisal(if he hadn't been hired by UCLA) were those guys. I have little doubt Todd Dodge will prove to be the same type of hire too-look at the qualities SMU needs not just the best Ole Ball Coach. Being a Division 1A Coach requires more than Xs and Os. That's why you hire Coordinators.

I assume from your description above that you would not favor June Jones either based upon the recruiting factor. I know this years recruiting will suffer big time regardless of the hire, but in your opinion from a perspective of future recruiting, does a really good coach even without many local recruiting ties stand a chance if he can load up with good assistants who do have good local recruiting ties?Stallion wrote:if Tenuta, Gailey, Johnson and Coker have really been under consideration, then we've got someone who doesn't understand what SMU needs to turn this program around. What about Shula? Do you think he is a possibility and if so would he also be at a disadvantage recruiting much like Jones?Stallion wrote:June Jones isn't interested in the SMU job-so I'm not going to worry to much about it. If June Jones is allowed to offer the same players as Hawaii it wouldn't be a problem. He won't. He will not be interested in this job. I have nothing but praise about June Jones Coaching ability.
So let me get this straight...Tenuta was D-Coordinator under Rossley (who was fired, right?), then one year under at OU under Schnellenberger (who was fired, right?) then under John Cooper at Ohio State (who was fired, right?) and then under Gailey at Ga Tech (who was also fired, right?)
And someone else says he didn't even have to recruit at Georgia Tech?
So allllllllllll of those other jobs he had got the HC fired because the offense sucked? Exactly who is it that has groomed Tenuta as a game day HC? Gailey? Exactly which of those positions required Tenuta & his superior(s) to build a program? Ohio State? Oklahoma? Definitely not SMU.
Someone tell me the appeal on this guy?
Oh yeah, for you big Copeland fans out there...guess where Tenuta played college ball.

my sentiments exactly. we are not going to throw $2M at someone with little or no coaching experience who has never proved anything

to do what, donate time and energy and money and join the Mustang Club? Tell us what coach would inspire you to do those!Stallion wrote:... None of these guys will inspire the alumni...
By the way, Tenuta allegedly will interview for the position soon.

All Darth can think of is...."We're doomed!"
The buzz is Tenuta. Gee Darth was planning to go the funeral pyre, but it looks like he will be around for a long time....
(Another unproven shot in the dark DC....) Will the insanity ever end.....
How can people who make more money than (pick your deity), foul this thing up so bad.....

Tenuta is without question a very good DC, but as I understand, no personality, not a great recruiter, and therefore not Head Coach material at SMU. It really would be unbelievable if SMU hired Tenuta as our Head Coach with the job of rebuilding our program. Hell, I think Larry Coker would be better.....This has got to be all wrong or we are in big trouble or have no idea what we are doing.
