More Coach thoughts...

Postby dfwfootballfan » Mon Oct 29, 2007 7:14 am

I know Phil is a quality person and he will move forward....just like it was time for the Mustangs.

Here are Coaches I like for the Hilltop...

June Jones---Wide open offense would attract many offensive recruits and bring back tired fans!

George O'Leary---Why leave Central Florida? You and A.D. have relationship. The City of Dallas remains the prize!

Major Applewhite---Like the youth and excitement. Believe he would stay if successful until U.T. opens. Lots of name recognition

It will be interesting who else quietly discloses their interest to the A.D. for the job! Good Luck Ponies!

Why do you think this? What comments has Applewhite made to lead you to believe this? Do you know him personally? Does he have a track record which would give you this impression?(no).

Way too much spouting off of opinion based on absolutely nothing.

I like June Jones, but do you think he would mesh well with SO and Turner and the rest of the SMU Community? Just want to hear your thoughts.

I don't think he's a good fit for SMU based solely on his recruiting methods. (I'm also assuming that Stallion and his model theory are more correct than not in that analysis.) However, I think his hiring would be a huge splash for SMU on the national stage. I will be absolutely shocked if SMU can bring him in, though. I'm afraid if Paul Johnson and Neuheisel both slow played Orsini, June Jones is probably doing the same thing to land more money from Hawaii. If Hawaii comes close to winning the Sugar Bowl, you watch, they will do everything they can (although that may not be much more than they are doing already) to keep him.

I still find it hard to believe that Jones would be interested, but if he were to come I look at the recruiting angle a little differently than do Stallion and others. Yes he was successful in recruiting the Polynesians that proved to be a great boost to the program, but I do not see this as an ethnic thing as much as a restricted area thing. He was limited with resources and by distance so he was forced to recruit locally and he did it very well. That could translate well to being able to recruit in the DFW area. He will have more funds for recruiting and a better base from which to draw and he has proven to be able to get the most out of a small source area. Hopefully that translates to getting some of the top local prospects while at the same time having the ability to seek outside of the area also if he so desires.

Okay, here's the drill as I see it. If we don't have a coach by next Saturday, then Mike Shula is the candidate. If we have a coach by next Saturday, then it will be either Jones, Fran, Coker, or if we've failed to secure a proven coach then it would be Tenuta. I'm guessing that Barnett and Bowden are not acceptable for some reason to the powers that be although I personally would want Barnett over Tenuta. But that's me.

I'm with you. My first choice, too.

Right you are - Steve-O and George-O are very tight.

If it was going to be O'Leary, wouldn't he have been announced by now? There at least would have been some kind of leak. UCF's bowl game was two days ago.

What methods make you say "I don't think he is a good fit for SMU." Wow. Crazy talk.
