So, let me see if I understand the logic here:
-You are offered a job that will double your salary and comes with greater prestige.

The response is either:
A. You take it because you are not living in a fantasy world and do what everyone else in America does in every industry.
B. Turn it down and stay in a position that does not reqrd you for your skills and expertise, while paying you less than you are worth.

I have been in situations similar(though the money was not nearly as much) and took a good 10 minutes to think it over before I signed on the dotted line. I am sure that 99% of us would do the same if the situation was presented to us and I am not sure I would trust the remaining 1% to do anything other than collect a pay check for the rest of their lives.

Fran is the best of the realistic choices - the problem is that he shupld have been hired months ago.

I've never understood the "anybody but Fran" crowd. I would hope he chooses to leave at the first opportunity. At least that would mean he's built a winning program. Downside?

Fran is still my first choice. But if we were going to hire him, it would've been over a month ago.

A big buyout solves the problem. It gives you money to buy another good coach when this one leaves. Beats the heck out of having to fire someone and then beg your supporters to pull money out of their pockets to hire someone. Do you think Ford, Sewell, et al will be willing to do this again? Filthy rich does not equal filthy stupid.

I would guess one of the things that might be taking some time is just that....a buy out will be a must for SMU for any new coach - and the "pitch in gang" will have that as a requirement - the new guy will want this as a stepping stone - and a big buy out is an albatross for whoever signs on -

He will be recruiting different players. He had contact with about 60 players at A&M, I mean that were really being recruited. There are many players he will recruit for us at SMU that he did not recruit at A&M plus the ones he built a good relationship with that truly loved him may follow him here, if we act before signing day lol. There is no ? the man can evaluate talent and recruit in TX
