This is not good. My guess is that Steinberg is leaking this in order to put pressure on UH to significantly increase JJ pay. Be assured that this is not coming from SMU sources. Does this make salary discussions with Fran / Coker tougher ? No way either of those guys get get $1.7 maybe a $ 1 million.

If JJ wants the money he should have a deadline of not later than Friday am ....take it or Steve O needs to move on...maybe a surprise canadiate he has had in back pocket all along !

Why would Fran take the job for 1 million when he can get 1.7 from A&M without getting out of bed every day. I think I read on one of the earlier post here that there is a clause in his buyout that would cancel his buyout payments if he got a new job and he did not negotiate in good faith to equal or exceed the buyout amount...or something along that line.

Of course Steinberg is leaking this. Its not like the people who can influence this decision don't already have an idea of what SMU is willing to offer. He's just trying to get exposure for his client which is what any good agent would do. This doesn't affect the outcome of this thing in any way.

Per the terms of the agreement, it is in his best interests to have a deal this year as opposed to next.

He gets 1.7 in year 1 regardless of what he does. I believe in all subsequent years the 1.7 is reduced by any amount he receives less than that. If he is paid over 1.7 in any of the remaining 3 years then A&M is not liable to pay anything.

What was then pointed out by our team of posting lawyers is that if you came in and offered $1.00 for years 2,3, and 4, A&M would have recourse due to lack of good faith or legitimate negotiations. (I know I have not used appropriate legalese)

I hear Hawaii wants to spend all the 4.5 million BCS money on new facilities and is wanting Hawaii donors to pick up the tab on JJ's double salary increase. I don't think the donors can pull it off and I think JJ is going to get pissed and bolt. Wouldn't you ? I mean the coach loves Hawaii, but he knows he doesn't have to work there......I think now he will end up at SMU unless he gets a better offer.

I am not a lawyer, I only pay them.

I do think you can push the envelope a little on this matter which could save you the equivalent of PB's annual salary.

Here's what I think it ocmes down to. If Hawaii treats Jones the way West Virginia treated Rich Rodriguez, then I believe he bolts for SMU (or any other job he's being linked with) just to be rid of the foolishness over there. Its not impossible, but I'd put the odds of us landing June Jones at around 25%

"SMU will pursue Hawaii coach Junes Jones and is prepared to pay between $1.5 and $1.7 million per year, according to two people familiar with SMU's strategy. "

Are those two people Leigh Steinberg and JJ?

Couldn't be Biggin. JJ doesn't meet his "scrap" criterion. And it couldn't be BigDaddy. He and Paul Pasqualoni are still sitting by the phone waiting for it to ring.
