What about the fact that nobody wants fran or coker?

We are the only Div. 1A school without a coach under contract right now.

IMO, its pretty obvious that any of these former coaches, Fran, Barnett, Bowden, etc. that are currently unemployed would be VERY happy to entertain an offer from ol' SMU now that all vacancies have been filled. It just goes to show you that a coach quickly loses market value once he becomes unemployed. Fran's best chance to remain a head coach was to try and jump to another school once he knew that he was gone at A$M, but before he was officially "retired" by them. Employers, not just in football, always like to hire someone that is currently employed and look at the unemployed as damaged goods. The longer they stay unemployed, the worse their chances are of obtaining a job that approaches the job description of their former job. Of course, this puts SO in the driver's seat right now. He has his choice of unemployed coaches that would coaches that would give their right arm for the position even with all its warts, because the odds of them ever being a head coach again without going the assistant route first, are slim.

Brilliant strategy by Orsini. If he doesn't get Jones (annd frankly that is the only possible way to salvage this coaching search at this point, including his reputation in conducting it), then in January he is finally in the driver's seat for a bunch of coaches who were available in October and November.

Question--Where was the backup plan after the Johnson implosion??

Answser--There apparently wasn't one.

Just brilliant.

Whomever Orsini ultimately hires, half the people on this board will fight you to the death to make you believe that he did a great job and that was his pick all along.

Will they also argue that foregoing a recruiting class was part of the big picture strategy as well?

June Jones has coached more BCS Bowl games at Hawaii than I have in my entire career at NM, TCU, Bama, and A&M combined.

Also, now that Fran knows that he's leftovers, the really really good leftovers though...or as some put it "the fat girl with the rich parents/dad that owns a liquor store", would he still come here in an instant if Jones said no? It would hurt my pride to know I wasn't the first choice, not that I still wouldn't come. However, I would definitely think twice before accepting the job. Whaddyathink? awkward.

Fran may realize that he is leftovers, but no one else wants him. I think he'd suck it up.

heres what the PC would sound like:

Reporter 1: so how does it feel to be the new SMU coach?
Fran: it feels good, theres a lot of work that needs to be done so im ready
Reporter 2: does it suck to know you were the last resort for this job?
Fran: no, ive always been last at verything i do, thats why A$M fired me
Reporter 3: so why did you take this job?
Fran: you'll see in 3 years when i bolt for a better job.

This is just knuts. A thread form U of Ariz. was posted in the last 2 day's wishing they had an AD like Orsini. U of Ariz. is Tucson. He has done what he said from the start. He has tried to get the best available coach and may have him. I think he does. Even if he doesn't, the second group is what many Universities strive to get. SO is shooting for the stars and probably got his star. If not, he hit the moon. SO is a top notch classy guy. Be good to him as he will go to ND if the doom people get their way. You have diamond here. Don't ++++ it up. Please don't ++++ it up.

How do you know that they have a plan?

You know what, maybe they are following the plan. But if the plan was to fire your coach in October, target one guy early without a backup option, scramble to find a backup option when your guy drops you for a BCS job, target new backup option that you cannot talk to until January, hope that he accepts in January and be prepared to offer a guy who was available in November if he doesnt, all the while ignoring that fact that nobody is recruiting to improve a team that went 1-11, then I think the plan sucks.
