Small time football

Post by PonySnob »

Watching the Ole Miss/Auburn and the OU/A$M game make one realize how small time SMU football has become. We will be lucky to have total attendance for all home games that equals as much as were at either of the above mentioned games today. It has to be very sad for SMU players to come out of the tunnel at Ford Stadium to see an empty stadium. The early 80's sure were a lot of fun!

you weren't paying close attention in the 80's. Even when we fielded top 25 teams, we had plenty of games before 20 something thousand in 65,000 seat Texas Stadium. We had good crowds when we had a visitor that brought them or when we gave tickets away. We haven't been "big time" football- attendance wise, since the Doak Walker/Kyle Rote eras.

I don't disagree with you about the crowds but at least we seemed to be able to give teams a decent game. SMU football can't compete with anybody at the Division 1 level today. It is hard to see how we will be able to meet minimum attendance requirements in the future.
