What is the answer?

Post by PonySnob »

What has to happen for SMU to ever be able to compete with the lowest caliber teams in Division 1 football? Certainly we will never be able to complete with teams from BCS conferences, but what about teams from the WAC, CUSA, MAC, Sunbelt, etc?

Honestly, I thought I knew and I used to say things that I thought would help...but nothing has helped so far...

It all starts and ends with the admission policies. Allow coaches to compete on a level playing field with other schools and wins will come. It is that simple.

So once we get the admissions policies changed, can we go hire a coach with creativity, gameday management skills, and the ability to adjust to his personnel?
Don't blast an honest question...

That tired refrain about the admissions policy doesn't really address the here and now, does it, McAndless?

For the sake of discussion, I'm willing to concede that may -- repeat, may -- be the root cause of the worst football season in SMU history. But does that fully explain the Mustangs losing 10 in a row and being one of only two winless teams in Division I-A? Is there nothing Bennett and his staff could have done differently with the talent on hand to win one measly game? If the answer is no, that the coaches have done everything humanly possible to win, I'm willing to accept it. But I've yet to see anyone make a convincing case for absolving the coaches of all responsibility for this humilating fiasco.
