Not considering Gary Barnett is even worse given his track record for turning around programs like SMU!
So who finally hired Bowden and Barnett???? Who????
PK, no one likes hiring someone who is unemployed for whatever reason. Employers always like to get someone who is "employed." I don't know if it is the thrill of the chase or what, but it is very difficult to find another job unless you are gainfully employed. In Barnett's case, it is obvious that his known problems with Colorado has prevented him from being considered for a number of head coaching jobs. That doesn't mean that all unemployed coaches can't get the job done. [deleted] Vermeil was unemployed for over 15 years before he got the Rams job. All he did was take them to the Super Bowl. In Barnett's case, I personally think too much has been made of the Colorado situation. As far as I know, he didn't violate NCAA rules and was not sanctioned by them. He has a demonstrated history of turning programs like ours around, which I think should be a major qualification given our recent, lousy history. I think Jones is taking us for a ride and would like to see someone with his experience considered for the job.

"Agreed, it's unbelievable. We [deleted] and moan about how much this program stinks and that we're not willing to make a committment to play ball with the big boys. They we pony up to actually do that and we whine about that too."
Really...totally agree.....I still don't know why they are here?
They think Orsini is an idiot. Oh boo whoo Orsini raises the BLVD prices. Oh guess what whiners?...Every BLVD spot with the new prices sold out. And some of them stated Orsini was a moron to do that. They claimed there would be alot more vacant BLVD spots. DIDN'T HAPPEN.
Now they "beach & moan" because Orsini is not going by the book. We have "gone by the book" for 20 freaking years. Look where it got us.
Lost recruits?....Gimme a break. We had a coach and look at our recruits?
For the life of me I can not figure out why they spend so much time on something they obviously have so much disdain for. They have no faith in Orsini. They are doom & gloom 24/7. The only thing I can figure, is they really don't believe the garbage they are writing! If they did....why are they here?

We're not even competing against anyone else now that all other D1 jobs are filled and we still can't land a coach.
.................We all wish it went quicker, but to say "we still can't land a coach" will not be correct when we have an excellent new coach in less than a week. The new coach will be someone guys will want to play for and coach will be able to recruit alot better athletes to SMU than we have had in the past..
And, for the 50th time, I will glady retract all of this and apologize to Orsini if he pulls it off. IF, not WHEN.

Generally speaking and I am sure there are exceptions, there appears to be a major generational gap between those of us who support Orsini's search and the naysayers. Hopefully all of us will get fully behind whoever the new coach is and the open wounds that are evidenced on this board will rapidly heal themselves.

Its difficult to have faith after dealing with 20+ years of failure, with probably 2-3 more years to come (time for the new FB coach to rebuild). Unless your name is Job, I don't fault anyone for not having the utmost faith and confidence that this will be turned around in the near future.

Small point here: While it's true he wasn't coaching, Vermeil was not "unemployed" at all. He worked for ABC as a color commentator for much of that time. He was around the game a lot and kept up with it. His success after such a long layoff put other coaches back on the radar screen - like the playoff-bound Joe Gibbs.

JT:
How many times have you said unmitigated disaster today??? Come up with something else. Use a thesaurus or something..."Unmitiagated disaster", your new catchphrase.
Also, after running a brief search on espn, cbssportsline, and reading the articles posted on ponyfans.com I'm not seeing all this "negative national media" towards SMU. All I've seen is objective reporting of facts. They've mentioned us on TV on ESPN News, and ESPN mostly just reporting that we've contacted June Jones. I love how people (not necessarily JT) believe that someone (national media) is hating on us and then all the sudden that belief morphs into fact.
1. It doesn't matter what other people think about us.
2. Even if it did, where's the proof that people are thinking negatively of us on a national scale?
Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!

Yeah, I bet guys are hanging out at water coolers all over the country talking about SMU's coaching search. "What was the name of that guy they fired, again?"
Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.

I'll be the first to say I wish we had a great coach right now out there recruiting a great class. However, I think the complaints about the length of time it's taken to hire a new coach go too far.
SMU rarely has much of a recruiting class. Even if we don't have a coach before signing day I'd bet we'd still get a few recruits. It will be not much worse than most years where the coaches have gone out trying to beg people to come here. In my opinion, the net loss from a long delay is minimal.
From what I can tell, Orsini didn't get the 10-12 million bucks for a new coach raised until after he fired Bennett, or perhaps a few weeks before then. It would be pretty hard to go to donors with Bennett in place asking for commitments when the team still had a shot at turning it around. That fact alone tells you that he didn't have the money to offer anyone until pretty much the end of the season. It was at about that time that he started courting Johnson and others. He obviously was interested in June Jones at the time, but was told he'd have to wait until after the Sugar Bowl to try for him. He's also exploring other opportunities as they open up, like the recently fired Mike Martz from the Detroit Lions.
The thing is, when I talk to friends about the situation at SMU right now, they're all stunned at the high quality of potential coaches we're going after. Every last one of them thinks SMU is clearly stating that it's not going to put up with a crummy football team anymore. Some cynical sports-writers and sportscaster just assume that anything SMU does is wrong or that they're getting played by someone. I just don't care what they think. If they were really geniuses about college football, they'd be on the sidelines, not in the press box. Most of the press I've read is pretty positive or just plain factual.
I'm happy with where we're at right now. We're going to get Jones, Fran, Martz or Coker. Any of them are better choices for SMU than someone like Bowden or Barnett.
The good news is this will all be over soon and we'll be celebrating the hiring of a good coach. The anger on this board will die down.

The anger and [deleted] will never die on this board. We will complain about his recruiting classes, assistant coaches he hired, that we won 10 games when we should have gone undefeated, we score too quickly on offense, we missed a sell out again by a couple hundred people, we still paid our coach too much money even after all of the wins, we need to be playing in BCS bowls every year, we should be in the Big XII not Baylor, why can't we bring the SWC back, our non-conference schedule, the color of our helmets, etc, etc, etc...
It is amazing how much old people on this site [deleted]...
