Thank you. Consider yourself pardoned, MrMustang(insert funny number here).
And I just saw a couple of posts earlier today that postulate the posters here are the reason SMU is such a joke. I was dying to use it, but only kidding.

Actually, it does make a difference. For the Hawaii seniors, their final season of competition is complete, and they are no longer subject to NCAA regulations. Now that their season is over and eligibility is expired, they will not perform in any future NCAA sanctioned competitions, so they are no longer governed by NCAA rules. The difference for the players at Ohio State is that their season isnt over yet. Also, this means that none of those seniors at Hawaii can play a spring sport (baseball, or track for instance), because they have accepted money that was directly related to their athletic performance.
The Ohio State situation occurred last year. The Final Four occurs in March and the first week of April. Not during football season.
The players had already completed their final competition and had already signed with agents. That's why Tressel thought it was OK. He was wrong and got reprimanded by the NCAA. No probation or anything, but was handed a number of secondary violations.
Understood. The difference is that the coach at Ohio State is still employed by the school, and coaches a team involved in NCAA sanctioned constests, so he drew the secondary violations and punishment, not the players. The fans who gave money to the Hawaii players are outside the NCAA's jurisdiction and so are the players. Now that I think about it, the school (Hawaii) could still get in trouble for organizing the event, and by extension so could Jones. Hmmm.
Some of the money goes to the venue they were at, Kahala Mall, with the remainder going to the Univesity Athletic Fund - aka, perfectly legal.
Just because both of our schools got nailed with violations doesn't mean we need to jump on others by ratting to the NCAA - especially if you're dead wrong. You'll look like a fool, if you haven't already.
