For those who think us waiting so long won't have much of an impact, my son and I went to Army All-American Bowl workout at Blossom Athletic Center today and to no surprise some had not even heard of SMU. Several schools there with representation (despite this so-called "dead period") including our conference rivals Tulsa, Houston, UTEP and Rice.
Again, the kids who will play at UT, A & M, Tech I know we have no shot at but there are quality kids from highly successful high school programs down here and elsewhere that end up playing for our rivals and then beating us. It would be nice to get our acts together and at least get our schools name out there.
I visited with my coaching friends at Smithson Valley and Madison and they both said SMU has no presence whatsoever in South Texas. One went so far to say that their DL who could be a player would go to Texas State before considering SMU.
We need to not only get a coach soon, we need to spend money on recruiting the Texas high schools and have some person/plan to do so.

The problems you are listing are not non-hire problems. I am sure all of those kids did not just forget who SMU was over the past 70 days. Those are prior coaching staff problems. Hopefully a skilled group of recruiters, be it Jones' group, or Fran's group, can improve exposure.

As long as you spell his name that way we may just get away with it.

This has been a long time problem that we've had with several different coaches. It has nothing to do with our current lack of a coach.

I don't care at this point who we hire, as long as we hire someone to actually do something not just in south Texas but all over Texas.
The non-hire / delay is certainly a part of the problem, especially for where we are starting in the minds of today's current recruits. It validates what the Tulsa boys down here are saying that we don't have our act together, athletes aren't taken care of anymore, etc.
It is still about attention to details (i.e. -- it is ridiculous we don't have media guides sent to every high school athletic department, that letters to recruits don't have their names spelled wrong, etc.) and there has been no emphasis there.
We need to at least look like we know what we are doing and that we have a plan to sell kids all over Texas. Right now, we look worse that everyone else.

Why are you choosing tonight to register these griefs? This is a new beginning time. Lets at least give the new group a chance (whomever they may be) before you chastise the program for past transgressions.

I posted tonight because I attended the Army All-American workout today. I don't sit and post all day, and thought some might like to know what I learned today.
For the record, I have registered complaints on attention to details many times before. My intent was not to chastise, but to point out we need to realize how far behind the eight ball we may be.
I more than anyone want to see us succeed. I am invested like others in the program with my football season tickets, basketball season tickets, Mustang Club dontations, Crum Center donations, etc. Of course I will give the new group a chance -- just think it may take them some time to get over this hurdle and wish things weren't so bad that the hurdle was so high.

I have read your previous concerns and I totally agree with what you say. But now I think you need to step back and see what comes out of this new dawning. If nothing changes, we can all charge with torches burning.
