"I can say we've been in discussions with SMU, and that nothing is resolved with SMU," Steinberg said.

SMU, which fired Phil Bennett during the season, scheduled a news conference for Monday.

If nothing is resolved, how can there be a press conference Monday? The placement of that second sentence is odd -- but if true, this could be great news.

How the hell does the Honolulu Star-Bulletin 'scoop' the Dallas Morning News with word of a news conference at SMU on Monday? :roll:

We'll probably be holding a press conference to present whomever our coach is. If they don't hire Jones, they'll get Fran or Coker out of the Econolodge and announce one of them as coach. Unless of course this is all a big bluff and they name Mike Shula as the coach on Monday. How faked out would we be?

Does that mean Orsini & Co. could be prepared for a presser and JJ and Steinberg could fail to show up?

Do you actually think they will break in with coverage of us? I hope so, but am not optimistic. I guess if it is Jones that will be a big story leaving Hawaii in a lateral move (of sorts).

Good call - get Coach Jones-to-SMU mentioned on the national championship game broadcast? Might be more thoughtful timing by Steve-O than a lot of us gave him credit for. Or maybe it was just luck.

Either way, I'm with MM65 - if Brad Sutton hasn't said it, the press conference isn't official. Sounds like someone in Hawaii is crossing a few bridges before getting to them.

The only place I have seen this outside of the Hawaii media (and they never quoted a source) was on ponyfans:

I hate to say this, but I think WE'RE responsible for this line in the story. I can find no information that SMU has scheduled a news conference for any reason on Monday. The only place I can find reference to this is on this board and on the UH board - which I think was quoting us. Some of the reports in newspapers about this deal are mentioning comments on these boards. It seems likely to me that some reporter saw "monday news conference" here and just added it in without thinking.
