Talk About Sour Grapes . . . .

Postby Pony^ » Sun Jan 06, 2008 10:47 am

In the grand scheme of Dallas sports, SMU barely has a pulse. It plays in an unwieldy conference similar to the WACs when it had 16 teams and the kids all drive Porsches and BMWs, and are as interested in the run-and-shoot as they are in Cut-and-Shoot, Texas.

Jones will find recruiting to be difficult because so many schools from around the country come to the Lone Star State with better offers and bigger programs. The alumni won't be interested in giving players like Colt Brennan and Davone Bess get-out-of-jail-free cards and academics will be a challenge at this highfaluting school.

OF COURSE, KNOWING Jones, he won't believe any of that. He'll think that what has worked before will work again in a conference filled with teams like Rice, Tulsa, UTEP, Southern Mississippi, East Carolina ... I could go on, but do you really want me to? You'd almost believe the only reason Jones is going is to stick it to those who questioned his autonomy in the fiefdom known as lower campus.

Jones won't have anything close to that in Dallas. Those guys who donate millions to the program will lead Jones around by the nose and tell him, "Boy, you're all hat and no cattle down here." The old soap opera "Dallas" made J.R. Ewing bigger than life, but for someone who spent most of his young days as a native Texan, there ain't no aloha out there.

Paul must be proud of the language he used in his column. That's complete amateur writing. Love the column sig with the ballcap. Boy, the paper really shows how top-notch it is.

I know it's a different way of life out there but please.

Granted, the facilities are topnotch and the on-campus stadium is practically new, but the team sucks, has sucked and will continue to suck no matter what Jones tries to do to improve it.

I take solace in the fact that he concedes UH is about to find out what it means to suck, suck, suck too.....

I will say it again. School recruit players not recruiting coordinators. Tn our case, if we land JJ he is the recruiting tool. Players will flock to SMU just because he is JJ. Receivers and QB's want to play for him because he throws the ball. Lineman in HS running the same offense (spread) will flock to play as well as DB's, because you get to practice against the pass daily.

If he went to a graduation ceremony at Moody, that is all the credibility he needs to make a judgement on SMU. He really does have a finger on the pulse here at SMU.

I like this part:

"SMU is not a good fit for a guy who wears aloha shirts and plays golf in his bare feet."

Actually sounds like a perfect fit to me. 8)

Exactly. And if his last experience at SMU was when he graduated high school, he must be an expert. What a maroon.

He is probably just an ex Texan who didn't like it here....JJ will be highly successful at SMU !

Screw him(the sportswriter) and the horse he went to Hawaii on.
I admit that my first choice is this deal is Fran; however, Jones certainly isn't the worst of picks, and IMHO, he is a better choice than Paul Johnson. The reason for Jones wanting to leave Hawaii probably has more to do with money. An offer that doubles your income and probably the income of your top assistants, not to mention a cost of living decrease by 30% (if he lives in HP/UP) or 60%+ (if he lives outside of HP/UP)...plus he coaches in a much more relevant market than Hawaii...I'd call that a better deal. And both the governor of Hawaii and this sportswriter dude can pound their beloved Mahalo sand. I highly doubt this one is ego...or at least that it's the primary mover.
