It is half of $800,016.

Now you can ask why the contract began at $400,008 and grew to $800,016.

Sounds like we are arguing over who pays the $400,008. Someone want to ante up?

If he resigned, would he need permission or just pay the $400k?

The fact that they gave us permission to talk to him would seem to indicate that they would release him if he decided to come here.

That's only for an NFL job - and in that case he wouldn't have to pay the damages.

They could easily require the buyout, and they may very well do so from what we have heard about them. That will probably be the bulk of the next coach's contract for them.

If they do require the buyout, there should be no snag. The snag, as I see it, is if they were told that there would be no problems getting a release from Hawaii, but that it just didn;t happen yet. IOW, SMU does not want to pay the 400K and would rather wait to get the release before pulling the trigger.

Ford doesn't write his own checks. May need someone to cut one in the AM.

If SMU is paying the buyout, there is NO HOLD UP with respect to that issue. It's not like they have to pay the buyout immediately. I suspect they may be trying to get that release and save themselves $400K....but what do I know?

If Hawaii University wants to play hardball, it can require the payment of the LD's (in fact a buyout for an early termination of the contract). If in fact 20 boosters are paying JJ salary, this would be an additional 20,000 each. Of course, SMU could pick this up since it is off the hook for any salary for the next 5 years. Oh I forgot, SMU is already running a deficit. This seems like something that can be worked out.

I don't think UH AD tells JJ to call him if he is going elsewhere or says that they won't get in the way of him going elsewhere if they are going to play hardball? Sure they might now, but they didn't need to say any of that if they weren't going to give him the opporunity in the first place.

You know, I thought it was kind of cute when the AD told Jones to call him before he finalized any deal. That is kind of like telling the girl that is walking out on you to please call after her date with her new guy. BUT with the release needed, that kind of assured that one more call will have to be placed by either Jones or Steinberg in order to make the request. Not a bad ploy at all.

He's already substantially performed his part of the agreement (in fact, 100% performed) for the final year of his contract.
