Seems I've Been Here Before....
In 1975, the Highland Park Scots went 1-9 in Class 5A. The following year, they competed against the Plano Wildcats in the semifinals.
I suffered thru my senior year with the Scots but, thank god, the Highland Park Band made the games FUN to attend because the halftime performances were more enjoyable than the games! Kind of like the situation at SMU right now. The Mustang Band SWINGS! :thumbupcool:

It's funny how things cycle out. I can remember when I was in HS(late 80s to early 90s) when HP used to have one of the worst band program in the area.

Re: Seems I've Been Here Before....
The HPISD administration allowed that to happen. At one time, there was NO band and halftime music was pumped in via the PA system!
Then...a bunch of mothers whose little babies couldn't learn how to play the bagpipes got up in arms that there wasn't a friggin' drill team (ugh!) at HP! Every time I see that godawful TXU Energy commercial with the Highland Belles and their drill team instructor, I want to puke!
$$$ was funneled into the formation of that group and taken away from the band program. Plus, there was no active recruitment of band members at the lower levels (grade school, middle school) because of the emphasis on athletics and the winning traditions that had started again in the football program. Thank god that there's been a return (somewhat) to the traditions at HP with the bagpipers and the drum dance and sword dance as part of the halftime! :thumbupcool:

Seriously though, we REALLY appreciate the support. Just get ready to cheer for us on Sat. AND stay afterward for the Post Game Concert we do after ever game. The more people that stay, the longer we play!!

Actually, the origianl post is almost incorrect. 1974 HP team was 1-9, '75 was 5-5, '76 team lost in the quarterfinals to Temple at Waco, and the '77 team played Plano at Texas Stadium. It took four years, not one, to improve to that level. Just setting the facts straight.

Re: Seems I've Been Here Before....
Yeah, there were a lot of older Mustang Band Alums who were around in the mid to late 60s out of HP who tell me the same thing. Of course, I used to hear the same stories about Hillcrest(where I went to school) and how things were back in the 60s and 70s but of course being it was a DISD school, we got what was expected. Yeah, it looks like HP has finally made a committment to their program, at least something of a committment. No excuse for a district like that not to have a solid program.Originally posted by MrMustang1965:

Hey Spaz, at least we can all be grateful that the Mustang Band isn't made up of Dorks like these.

I like this one better. Shows you that they'll go for any piece of tail, even the mascots.

After hearing that crap at the WAC Basketball Tournament in Tulsa last season(who could forget that stunning rendition of the theme from Mortal Kombat), I dread the halftime show that they'll do on Saturday.you can't forget the MOB at Rice!
