what to expect next year (bad news)

Postby fan » Wed Nov 12, 2003 10:01 pm

A quick statistical breakdown of college football (Div. 1A) shows that we should not get our expectations up very high for next year. Since 1996 a team has won 0 or 1 games only 35 times. A team has gone winless only 12 times!!! A team has had back to back winless seasons only once (Duke). Only 4 teams have gone from winless or one win to a winning record the next season (TCU was one, S. Carolina another). THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF WINS FOR A TEAM COMMING OFF A ONE WIN OR ZERO WIN SEASON SINCE 1996 IS 3. I'd bet we win exactly 2 games next season. I don't even know the schedule but statistically speaking I'd be hard pressed to think any differently. I'm probably posting this a little prematurely. I'll bring it up again in August.

premature indeed. I will bet you a case of Peruna we win at least four next year. (Is that a long time from now or what?)

I think we will significantly improve the quality of the athlets on the field next year at most every position but again the youth of those players may prevent many more victories. But we will add ATHLETES like Massey, Munlin, Henderson, Cleveland, Muse, Meeks, Z. Hall, DeLay, V. Hall, Mcgee, Moss, F. Turner, Barnett, Lindley and bevy of young but stout beef like Burley, Peveto, Boren and seasoning from Phillips, Pellerin, Cleveland, Sturdivant, Desmond Jones and Bonds and many more. We haven't had a talent infusion like that in one year for about 20 years-at least 18 of those guys were pretty highly recruited something we haven't seen around here in awhile-I'm excited to get them on the field and again I think the talent step-up will be clearly visible from the stands if not the scoreboard. I look for this team to start making some steps toward respectability as we get later into the WAC schedule.

Don't disagree with your post Stallion. However, the fact is that of the 35 teams that had one win or zero win seasons, only 7 of those followed with five or more wins. Interestingly, only one team had 4 wins. The median number of wins was 2. (Hence my predicition)

Unfortunately with Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU as our first three games in 2004, looks like we might be winless in September again.

Who cares about what month those games take place in, P-Snob. That old line was from a few years back when we would go O'fer in the month and then pick up wins against the WAC. BTW, I'll give you TT and OSU are out of reach, but not TCU... They aren't in the same league with the Big XII and you (ooops, I mean they) likely will have a different coach next year.

They may be much better 2 or 3 years from now. The press they've gotten this year has to provide a huge boost to recruiting
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Just think of it as this way Its our last season in the WAC!!!! This season is just like starting our whole program over cause basically it is...New Coach, New System, First season to recruit. It was a whole new turn for our program hence us being 0-10 right now. Next year I predict us to between 3 and 5 games. Then the games of us gettig back to winning every game will slowly come back!!

During the Va-Md game tonight, Lee Corso listed us as the 4th youngest team in the country (Vanderbilt youngest). It's a little early, but I'll go ahead and predict 4 wins next year. We certainly won't run up the score on anybody, but I don't think we'll repeat as the worst offensive team in the NCAA. We coulda-woulda-shoulda won 4 games this year already, if we could score AT ALL. We need BIG MEN!

I agree with Stallion and Knucklestang, the next 3 years will be awesome with size, talent and team players creating MOMENTUM to WIN.

Let's hope that the momentum in recruiting isn't offset by the horrible year. CUSA will help some but I think it will be difficult to replicate last year. SMU is the laughing stock of Texas football. I don't care how good you are as a recruiter, that is hard to overcome. Bennett could sell a vision last year and maybe this one but results have to start being better on the field to maintain (let alone improve)from last year. This year's recruiting will be a huge factor in seeing where we are going. A poor class and this boat will be sinking for a long time. There is tremendous pressure on Bennett and staff this year.
