They are FREAKING out on a few Hawaii boards. Calling for the heads of the AD, chancellor and president. Using all sort of native Hawaiian words I don't know the meaning of. Sad for them, but it's kind of funny.

Good luck, Ponies. I'll be cheering for you!!

It would be nice if you knew the situation better, and I believe a lot of people here do know some of the story. The AD... if you want to call him that, is completely responsible for the mess that is now the Hawaii Football Program. For years he made promises to JJ and for years he failed to deliver.

To give you an idea of his (The AD's) ineptness... when the Sugar Bowl gave the school 15,000 tickets to distribute to fans, he sent 4,000 back without even checking with anyone. Never mind it was the biggest moment in Hawaii football history. The guy is either completely clueless or it is/was his goal to totally destroy the football program altogether.

If you think the folks on the Hawaii board calling for Frazier's head is something new... it's been going on for at least a year. The guy has failed time and time again.

You say it's kind of funny... not really. Certainly this is a great move for SMU. JJ is a top notch coach and will deliver wins very quickly. But in Hawaii, he took over a program that was rumored to be getting dropped. He made the community and the Hawaiian culture part of the new team identity. He took the worst team in the NCAA and made them one of the best teams. He did this in only 9 seasons despite absolutely no help from the AD, who continually lied to him.

Now... fast forward 5 years from now... if SMU has completely reversed their fortunes and have played in the biggest game in SMU history. Suddenly... JJ leaves... will it seem funny then? Of course not.

As I stated, 99% of Hawaii fans are quality people. Most, if not all, are agonizing over the turn of events in just one weeks time. For a state that has no other football game in town, no pro, no other college, this team is EVERYTHING. To have the man who not only saved that team, but helped it rise to national prominence, depart less than a week after the biggest moment in team history is a jarring event.

For you to sit there and say it's funny... well, I believe one could show a little more compassion.

I understand SMU has had a long period of bad football and now you guys are excited about what could happen. That is fine. Just don't take delight in another's misery.

Not funny to most of us.

You can tell what June meant to Hawaii. Everytime I am out there, you can get the feel. Like Timmy Chang for The Heiseman. It more like a family thing as UH football is the main "act" out there. Much like in West Virginia, Nebraska, Alabama....

I am sure nobody on here is trying to rub it in your face.

Tough loss for sure.

Not sure I would rather be where we are with the "hope" of winning versus what you all just went through, which is WINNING!!!

Well said. It should also be noted that the OP was not an SMU fan....I believe he's a Texas Tech fan, which most likely explains the lack of class in his post.

yea, this guy is not a SMU fan.

This happens all the time in sports unfortunately. The great teams lose the coach, players, etc in NFL and college. If that happens to SMU, I'm sure we will be all disappointed. Hopefully he'll stay for a little while - at least 4 yrs.

SMU understands misery

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Jan 07, 2008 6:25 pm

As has been noted, it wasn't an SMU fan who said that the repercussions in Hawaii are funny. We, too, have known football glory and lost it - lost it for 20 years. The misery we suffered for a full generation is not likely to cause gloating about the AD problems somewhere else. If anything, we can only hope that the UH will make the internal changes needed to support big time football, and do it sooner than later. Otherwise they might suffer our fate. True, JJ may well move on if he succeeds at SMU like he did on the islands. Once we get back on top, the committment is there to stay up and never sink so low again. At least I hope our corporate memory will forever remember what it has taken to recover what we had lost. End of eulogy.

And who but SMU fans would know about having an administrator and athletic director that did not support athletics. We "feel your pain" because we have lived it.

Now if the Mob Boss can put some pressure on some of the teachers that make fun of the football team in class.....
Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I talk.

Having lived through the glory days of the pony express and then the DP. I can empathize with the Hawaiians. They have lost a class person and will, unfortunately feel the pain in future seasons. I wish them the best. They have been fortunate to have had June Jones and his staff.
Long live Varsity!!!!!!!!!! Mustang football is about to start it's rebound- at last we have hope.

I think it will come. A few wins and there won't be much to mock. Not to mention that I don't see Jones liking it.
