From what i heard in Hawaii if UH worked on his contract a year ago he would've taken whatever Hawaii gave him. And being from Hawaii their cheap skates big time. SMU wanted a winner, no frills, straight up coach and SMu was willing to pay. He started in Hawaii making $300k a year and when his contract got extended 5 years ago people we're grimacing at his new pay at $800K. SMU appreciates a great coach and thier program. He deserves to be at SMU. Imagine with more money for recruiting, better facilities, and more support what he would do for this program. I'm joining SMU!!
GO SMU!

I look @ what Memphis accomplished this year after a bad 2006-2007 season. Look what Rice did in 2006-2007.
We are in the best conference for a quick turnaround.
I expect to be in the PapaJohns Bowl, New Orleans Bowl or something like that next yr.
In the near future, I expect us to win CUSA.
Its time for the expectation level to change for not just the players but the fans as well. We should expect it & deserve it.

A bowl game in season two is probably realistic. But keep this in mind...Jones took Hawaii from 0-11 to 9-4 in one year. But in year two they were back to 3-9. Optimism is deserved, but don't be delusional.
SMU would have had to pay the money they paid Jones for ANYONE to take that job. While it's a step up facility wise from Hawaii, it's not any better than any other major D-I school.
The weak ranking was inarguably due to a weak schedule.
Hawaii was back at 3-9 IMO due to the loss of D-Coach Mack to Tech.
While I don't know much about SMU at this point (being a Hawaii fan), I do know that your players will be at their best (or more so) come the start of the season. You are getting a HC with a state-of-the-art offense and the book on the offense is still being written..

Im guessing you haven't seen the facilities
The sole export of Chuck Norris is pain
Sorry if I didn't make my point a little better. I understand SMU had to pay the money. I am glad to see the commitment and thankful to the donors. I just wonder what is the level of success we should expect.
To use the analogies posted so far, we have by far the nicest house and the hottest girl. Are expectations over time (not talking about rebuilding overnight) going to reflect our home and girl status? I don't think in 3-4 years we can be 7-5 and pay this type of money and consider it a success or can we.
Thoughts?

my expectations for next year include this team making the few plays we just missed on when we played UTEP, Tulane, Rice & Memphis, thus more Ws........I expect Willis, Sanders, Givens among others on offense to reach their full potential......I expect a more realistic shot at pulling off an upset when we are underdogs...
