Mitchell Katy QB

Postby Sideline » Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:29 pm

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the quarterback from the state champion Katy squad committed to Jones and Hawaii? Bo Levi Mitchell? The name is almost too corny to take seriously, but if Jones liked enough to offer, I hope he'd rather make a 4 hour drive up 45 and let his parents watch him play.

Its obviously doubtful we're going to sign a kid to enroll this semester, but Timmy Chang was eased in as the starter as a true freshman and I wouldnt be shocked to see the same if Jones identifies or has identified, signs and develops a kid to take it pretty early.

Nevermind. I read a little further and found the board already discussing him.

Nonetheless, he didnt have his own topic.

I have a real hard time believing JJ will recruit a QB better than Justin Willis for next year, and if he doesn't, it's not going to happen when Justin is a senior

I don't know Mavs, I saw JWill take some pretty hard shots at the TCU game. What if he didn't get up after one of those hits.

You feel comfortable with our current Plan B?

I was responding to the question about having a QB recruited to take over the starting QB duties from Justin Willis...thats not going to happen.

With a month left, there are a few possibilities that would deliver a perfect candidate to Jones.

His QBs must first be leaders, possess an ability to make (correct) snap decisions, and be extremely fundamentally sound.

I hope Justin works harder than he ever has in his life and will finally be a beneficiary of someone on staff that has actually coached a quarterback, but the three mentioned traits are where he needs the most work.

The good news is Jones will play the player most likely to lead the team to wins. If Justin works and earns it, I would happily congratulate him for accomplishing it and have a lot of faith he can.

But your statement that it is doubtful he can find anyone better is pretty weak. That mentality has been accepted just long enough to become a laughingstock in college football. Inflated stats against weak defenses in catch-up losing efforts, a lack of position competition, and immature tantrums are easy to replace.

Remove emotion. I'm not suggesting Justin isnt the guy. In fact, for this program to hit the ground running, he must be. But listening to Jones speak with Rich yesterday, nobody has a job yet. Whoever conceptualizes the offense quickest, makes the proper throws, and puts the team in position to win will be the starter.

The previous regime did some of these players a real disservice by coddling and failing to deliver some great football lessons, which in turn become life lessons. No one is entitled to anything and I'm close enough in age to the current playing generation to see some of these kids have real issues regarding that. Not implicating Justin, just got off on a rant because fans and supporters that throw statements like "doubt he could find anyone better" is disturbing. We're all replaceable. Turn the page.

I completely agree that no one is entitled anything, but realistically, we are not going to get a quarterback that is better than Justin right now.

I like Justin, I don't think he's gods gift to SMU like some on here have in the past, but he is the best quarterback we've had in a long time at the hilltop.

His freshman year showed that he is somewhat special, lets enjoy the 2 years he has left instead of talking about benching him, shall we?

I really wish we would get over this idea that you only recruit 1 good player at every position. Give me backfield depth like Dickerson, James and Waggonner then followed by a freshman like Reggie Dupard then replaced by a Jeff Atkins(5 US Top 250 Players). Good players want to play for good programs. At least at QB and WR that's what we should hope to get from a Jones hire (of course to a lesser CUSA degree). Big Daddy understands getting quality depth. Remember Hawaii wouldn't have made it to the BCS or Sugar Bowl w/o a cameo appearance of Tyler (whatshisname) in the Nevada game. At WR we are going to need about 8 quality receivers.

That is exactly why top programs lose so many transfers. They stockpile the good ones and if they do not find the field they leave. I do not see Texas turning down a top (insert position here) because they already have one. That is also why we need to "recruit" transfers. Legally of course.

BTW I just noticed that the QB from Katy hasn't even made his official visit to Hawaii yet so there are probably still some unknowns in his mind about the program especially with some of the horror stories in recent days. Hate to see an 18 year old kid miss out on a trip to Hawaii though.

Ken Hatfield recruited me while he was at West Point. He wanted me to visit but I told him I was going to commit to SMU. He asked me over and over to come and visit. He said, no obligation, just take the trip and enjoy. I declined and regret to this day not taking advantage of the opportunity to see West Point. The kid should take the trip unless he is definitely not going to go there and he feels it could cost him a scholarship somewhere else.

Katy's QB scheduled to visit the Islands on Jan. 18th. Here's an article from Dec. 17th Honolulu Advertiser.

by Stephen Tsai

The quarterback of one of the nation's best high school football teams has accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Hawai'i.

"I'm going to be a Warrior," said Bo Levi Mitchell of Katy (Texas) High School. "It's a quarterback's dream to go out there and play football. I'm going to be living a dream."

Mitchell, who said he is 6 feet 1 1/2 and 195 pounds, has thrown 38 touchdown passes this season. He has been intercepted only four times.

"Hawai'i is getting a good one," Katy coach Gary Joseph said. "He's a good player and a good person. He's a feel-good story."

Joseph said Mitchell was a backup on Katy's freshman team. He had limited time as a sophomore. But Mitchell emerged as a starter as a junior, and this season is one of the team captains.

Joseph said Mitchell is 28-1 as a starter.

Katy has been ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. Katy is No. 4 in the last USA Today's Super 25 rankings.

Mitchell said his parents are former Hawai'i residents.

"They really liked it out there," Mitchell said.

The families of Mitchell and UH cornerback Ryan Mouton, a former Katy standout, have been friends for several years. Mitchell visited Mouton when the Warriors trained in Houston in the week between the Louisiana Tech and Nevada-Las Vegas road games.

Mitchell said he gave his highlight videotape to Mouton, who forwarded it to the UH coaches.

Mitchell said he kept in contact with the UH coaches.

This week, the Warriors offered a scholarship to Mitchell, who accepted immediately.

Washington State and Kansas State had talked to Mitchell.

"If I were two inches taller, they'd take me," Mitchell said, recalling his conversation with the K-State coaches. "I'm not 6-4. It didn't matter. Hawai'i is the school for me."

Mitchell is scheduled to visit UH beginning Jan. 18. But he said his commitment is firm.

With the departure of Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan, the Warriors will have five returning quarterbacks — Tyler Graunke, Inoke Funaki, Jake Santos, Shane Austin and Kiran Kepo'o.

Exactly.

Learn from our past mistakes-- the last coaching staff polished a rough gem in Rogers @ DE-- then forgot to recruit for his future replacement.

We need a QB every year...
