It is all about usSome of you have this all wrong. We are not legitimizing UNT by playing them. They are doing it all by themselves. They have hired their own version of a wow coach, at least for the north texas area, and are out recruiting hard in every metroplex school. They are lifting themselves. And with a student population of almost 35,000, they have a several times multiple of our alumni base on which to draw for support.
We on the otherhand, until SO, IN ATHLETICS have wallowed in our our own self pity and defeat. UNT has not advanced anywhere as much as we have fallen. This is why the SO, Doh and JJ hires are so important to our school. No, they will not make SMU's achedemics improve. But they will change a metroplex image of SMU as a small insignificant floundering school. Every week, they probably put more fans in the stands than we do, with a similar record. I am very proud of my degree from SMU and it has provided many oportunities for me. But like many of you, I have not had pride in our football and basketball programs for a long time. But another thing that I am not proud of is our arogance. It reflects the eletist attiude attributed to SMU that repells most of the Dallas community almost as much as our weak sports effort. If you question why more Dallas area kids do not come to SMU then look at our own issues. I dispise the guy in my office, and there is always one, who thinks that he should get ahead, just because of who he is, and not because of what he has accomplished. If we want to put UNT or anyone else in their place, lets do it on the field, court or classroom. Talking about how much better we are will only impress ourselves and repulses others. If SMU is to maintain its place as the premier school in the area or state, it will do so only by its pursuit of excellence. This is why SO, Doh and JJ, and all of our players are so important. This is why we must buy tickets and show up for games. Pony up is not just about money, it is about pride in a job being well done. Where oh where is Hayden Fry
Wow, why do you bother?
This is pride in a job well done.

Giant banners featuring images of past Mustang greats stretched from floor to ceiling. A red carpet marked the path to the podium. Nice job, Beanman.
But I do disagree on one item..... academics will be effected positively by success on the football field and the basketball court. Why? Success gets your name out there and more people want to come to your school, the more applications the more selective you can be, the more selective the higher the caliber of the average student, engaged students - across the board - leads to a more engaged faculty - across the board, and an excitement in those faculty to stay at SMU. That is a direct line to an improvement of academics. A more indirect route is the faculty themselves... you put your name out there often enough, whether an academic is interested in sports or no, just having your name in the ether always helps, albeit in this case extremely marginally (as an academic will want to go to a place with like minded individuals and the highest caliber at that... but any press is good press). Anyhow, great post. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
