If McMacklin doesn't come

Postby EastStang » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:00 am

Jones will probably aim high for a defensive coordinator. Remember his first DC at Hawaii was Jerry Glanville.

He is a head coach right now so I wouldn't expect him. Will be interesting to see who he gets. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

His first DC at Hawaii was NOT Glanville, it was McMackin who left for Tech the next year. Z Then cmae Kevin Lempa who is now a DB coach at BC (the last I checked). Then it was a dual headed monster (Miano and Lumpkin) that was so bad that it ranked about last in D1a. Then Glanville and back to Mac. Looks like Mac is the front runner for the job.

I think this could be a significant loss for us, both from a recruiting perspective and a scheming perspective. I'd like to see McMacklin join the SMU staff.

Not trying to be negative. I'm sure JJ has an excellent replacement in mind.

The sky is falling. The sky is falling.

At Tech, he was named one of the nation's top coaches by American Football Magazine. McMackin also was named the Big 12 Conference's top recruiter by Rivals.com. His defense made an immediate impact in 2000 as the Red Raiders finished the 2000 campaign ranked sixth in the nation in pass defense and 10th in pass efficiency defense while atop the Big 12 in pass defense. In two seasons, the Red Raiders posted four shutouts and held three opponents without an offensive score.

McMackin shows interest

By Ferd Lewis
Advertiser Staff Writer

University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator Greg McMackin, who had been expected to follow June Jones to Southern Methodist University as associate head coach, has shown an interest in succeeding Jones as the Warriors' head coach, according to people involved in the process.

McMackin declined comment but athletic department staffers said he has had conversations with interim athletic director Carl Clapp and associate athletic director John McNamara.

McMackin, 58, had originally been scheduled to leave for the Mainland but has chosen to remain here, people in the department said. His wife, Heather, is in Texas where the family has a home.

Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw met with the coaching staff yesterday and several people said McMackin has wide support among the staff in his bid to succeed Jones. Several prominent boosters have also taken up a campaign on his behalf.

McMackin is in his second stint at UH. He was Jones' original defensive coordinator and associate head coach here in 1999, when the Warriors achieved the biggest single-season turnaround in NCAA history going from 0-12 in 1998 to 9-4 in 1999.

McMackin left in 2000 to be defensive coordinator at Texas Tech, and later was associate head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (2003-'05).

Before his first stop at UH, McMackin had been defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks and defensive coordinator at the University of Miami (1993-'95), Naval Academy (1992-'93) and Utah (1990-'92).

He served as head coach and assistant athletic director at Oregon Tech (1986-'90).

Looks like he may be head coach so he is saying he is staying Hawaii. If he does not get the hc job then I bet he follows June to SMU.

That can't hurt.
Anyone know where in Texas?

Unless he's hired at UH, then Big Mac is coming here.
