June Jones is a national name. He will have no problem recruiting QBs. The reason that Hawaii had such low standards was because it was impossible for him to get kids from the mainland and there are not enough players in Hawaii to build a college program. So he used the kids with grades issues to help the problem of not being able to attrach kids from the mainland.

SMU has now loosened its academic requirements to get Jones to go here. We threw him everything he wanted. Also, Jones is the master of the run and shoot and runs a very specific system. Like he has done at Hawaii, he will be able to identify players that fit his specific system, which is huge in recruiting.

Commitment has many parts

Postby Boston Pony » Wed Jan 09, 2008 8:55 pm

The formal structure of the SMU Football program took a big financial commitment this week. The question is will it be enough. On Recruiting, SMU issue isn't getting hs or jc players in but getting anyone interested in coming. In the past 2 - 3 years, SMU has had only a handful of players that couldn't get in. For now, removing transfers (which is a systemic issue that will not get addressed soon and is not the key issue). The issue is why come to SMU? - little recognition i.e. CUSA & very little TV, small crowds in the stands, a general lack of spirit on campus & few players in NFL over the past 10 years. We have had very little success on the field and degrees from SMU are okay but not that much better than from competing schools. We have lacked excitement on & off the field. Why would a top recruit come to Dallas?
Well they have begun to change that with the hiring of June Jones. The next year will be the tale of the tape - This year's recruits may produce a surprise player or two but next season we see if a true turnaround will occur. Campus excitement can be generated quickly - make Ford the place to be on Saturday night, the Coach can build excitement - recruits want is available from someone of his reputation, however in the final analysis it is a number of things that build a program and the Commitment (financial & academic) is just one...

There is no question but that "being on the outside looking in" at the BCS hampers recruiting - but the past few years, with Utah, Boise and Hawaii running the table and qualifying for BCS games...the argument can be made that you actually have a much better chance of reaching a BCS game at SMU than you do going to Texas Tech or Okla State or several other BCS programs. If a kid aspires to play in a BCS bowl game, recent years (and Jones' personal experience) have shown that it absolutely can be done at a place like SMU
