Alan Peppard: SMU's wealthiest fans treat new coach to dinner

Sunday night, before new SMU football coach June Jones accepted the job, he attended a dinner at Nick & Sam's steakhouse. Billionaire banker and former SMU board chair Gerald "Jerry" Ford picked up the dinner check, but none of the guests got out cheap.

Each member of the group who showed up had committed a minimum of $100,000 a year for five years to SMU's athletic program.

SMU president Gerald Turner and athletic director Steve Orsini joined the gathering as did Coach Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg. Among the diners were Houston's Paul Loyd (as in SMU's Loyd All-Sports Center), SMU board chair Carl Sewell, Collins insurance family scion Richard Collins, Amarillo National Bank president Richard Ware, Brookshire Grocery exec Brad Brookshire, Gary Crum (as in SMU's Crum Basketball Center), insurance exec Randall Goss and brothers Daniel and Clark Hunt, sons of the late Lamar Hunt.

Coach and company

Once Mr. Jones accepted the SMU job, and after all the backslapping and press-conferencing died down, he wanted a quiet Tex-Mex meal.

Monday night, Mi Cocina co-founder Ray Washburne cleared out the third floor of the Highland Park Village Mi Cocina and joined Steve Orsini, Leigh Steinberg and the new coach for a private meal with the TV tuned to the BCS National Championship Game.

i would guess the third floor of Mico's would be interpreted as the bar upstairs....

Appreciate what the big donors did. They kept their money on the table because they want the football program to succeed.

It sure is bro. I love the feeling of a dark/dungeony bar. Plus the beer selection there is superb. I just wish it wasnt over there close to Uptown. Thankfully most of the Dallas [deleted] crowd keeps their leased BMW's and frosted tips over at places like Mantis.
