Out of State Recruits

Post by Ponyfan999 »

This is obviously my first post so I appreciate yall bearing with me. First of all I want to thank everyone on PonyFans.com, I have been reading the forums since the day Bennett was fired every single day and yall have kept me informed and excited. I am pretty recent SMU grad and this year was my first year buying season tickets but it will definitely not have been my last. Obviously like everyone else I am really excited about this week and I can not wait for what is to come.

I am not sure if this has been brought up but one of the things I am most excited about is the opportunity to get recruits from all over the country. Just a bit more than half of SMU’s population is from out of state (54% out of state according to collegeboard.com), which shows that we are more than a regional school academically and now that we have a national powerhouse coach we should be able to target top recruits from all over the country instead of the just over twenty guys we have on the roster now that are from out of state. I am not saying that it is bad to have a predominantly Texan team. Texas has some of the best if not the best HS football in the country but now that we have coach Jones we should be able to not only dominate recruiting in our own area but also in other schools as well. Once again thanks so much for all the information these past few months, I would have posted sooner but I wasn’t sure I had much to add that was not said already.

Northern Illinois, specifically Lake County, produces outstanding players from HS, which are consistently Top 25.

Have referred two seniors this year. Hope they are followed up on. Both First Team All County, one MVP Offensive Player of the Year and the other, best defensive player, who wants to play for Mustangs.

I too think we should not limit recruiting to any one area as along as we don't deliberately, or because we have to, avoid local top players. I also would like to see some "branding" with the city of Dallas as was once proposed by a certain opinionated poster whose name everyone knows. We should prominently place a big "D" right on the back of our helmets and make sure everyone on TV knows what that stands for. This is much like Frenso did with its association with the Valley area of California. That's my two cents worth...

Actually, I received a reply email to one I sent to Steve Orsini.
It was from Rosemary Hachtman...very nice of her to respond. Those guys are working overtime, and I appreciate how quickly she responded.

The recruiting contacts at this time are as follows:
Randy Ross, Director of Football Operations @ 214-768-1221
Mike Vaught, Exec. Assoc. A.D., 214-768-1649

This is certainly subject to change as Coach Jones gets boots on ground and hires a staff, but at this time, please note that Vaught & Ross are the preferred means of contact.

Open the floodgates, gentleman (and ladies)...and remember, for the record, the policy regarding alumni contact of prospective recruits is that we are not to have any...just run and shoot (pun intended) to the guys that do this for a living.

Welcome Ponyfan999!
I agree there will be plenty of kids nationally that want to play in this offense.

There is room for us there...John Curtis' coach is not securely in LSU's camp. You may recall that Joe McKnight went to USC...

OUT OF STATE RECRUITING

Post by FLORIDAGUY »

Florida exports 300 to 400 players to out of Florida Bowl schools every year. These typically are skill posotion players. Florida is second among states in number of students at SMU. We have been missing a big opportunity to get studs from top quality programs that are already sending students to attend SMU.

We need 4 to 10 300 pound Hawaiians to play the line at SMU

40% BIG MEN in every recruiting class.

400 a year? You're not exaggerating just a tiny smidgen, are you? There would be about 55 "out of FLorida Bowl schools" so each one takes 8 players from Florida every year?

Did you see Hawaii get dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage by Georgia? They were manhandled. We need big guys on the line, but I havent seen anything to suggest that an all-Hawaiin line up would be any kind of improvement over the players that are available in our own state.
