OT: Boss Sending Me To Omaha, Nebraska :(

Postby StallionsModelT » Fri Jan 11, 2008 11:48 am

Bored at work and flying out on Saturday for a client meeting. Hopefully I can find a good bar to watch the Cowboys/Giants game there in Omaha. Anyone have any suggestions for bars/fun things to do there?

Make sure you wear a coat with REAL fur in it or you might regret it. Fake fur doesn't cut it even if it is PC!

Do you know what area of town you will be in? That would help as far as recommending a sports bar, but you should hang out in the Old Market--bar/restaurant area downtown.

Definitely need to get out for steak/prime rib too. Best in the world!

Let me know if you want any specific recommendations.

I won't go so far to call Omaha the best steak place in the world...but Market area is pretty fun...Couple of casinos not to far away...

OK. Well, almost every bar in town has TV's, so you won't be unable to find the game. Most of the full on sports bars are out west though.

Downtown there isn't anywhere with big screens, but several have small plasmas. I'd go to Barry O's to watch the game if you are down there (a little dive Irish bar on 10th street)

Midtown has a new sports bar in Dundee (called Beer and Loathing--stupid name, but decent bar.) This is also right across the street from the Dundee Dell (kind of famous bar with pretty decent food and also claims to have the largest collection of scotch in the world--also has 1 big screen.) These are at 50th and Underwood (a few blocks north of Dodge St.--the main road through town.) The Old Dundee is also a pretty fun bar a few blocks south of there (don't think there are TVs.) However, if you are in this area and like dive bars--you MUST go to The Homy Inn. Total dive. Locals only. They have (really bad) champagne on tap and serve peanuts in dog food bowls! I wouldn't do this for the game, but this might be my favorite dive bar in the country. (I used to live right up the hill from there and studied there many an afternoon during medical school!) Johnny Rodgers has opened a new sports bar in this area too (I believe at 32nd and Harney, but I have not been there yet.) There is also a newer place around 72nd & Dodge called Indigo Joe's that isn't too bad to watch a game.

If you are out west, I would try to find a Brewsky's (there are several.) But all of your BW3's, Champps, etc. chain places are out there.

Other cool bars downtown: There is a great wine bar called Le Bouvette. Directly across from the Upstream (brewery with over-priced microbrews that aren't that great--but has decent food.) Dives: Barry O's, O'Connors, Billy Frogs. Nicer places: Mr. Toads, French Cafe. There is an underground irish bar (a block west of the Old Chicago) called The Dubliner (doesn't every town have one?) This bar is a great time in the winter (don't ask me why) but live Irish band on weekends, and tons of people pack in during the winter months.

3 casinos about 6 blocks from downtwon (right across the river in Iowa) Bars in Iowa also stay open until 2, so when the bars close in Omaha at 1, you can just jump across the river for another hour although Council Bluffs--called Counciltucky by the locals--is a little shady. (not unsafe, just that the Counciltucky joke is probably more insulting to Kentucky than the Iowans!)

If you're looking for tourist stuff to do, the zoo is the main attraction (rated just behind San Diego's) but it is pretty cold these days. A lot of the big stuff is indoors though--world's largest indoor rainforest, really big aquarium, this huge indoor desert dome thing, and an IMAX that usually has pretty good shows. The zoo is south of downtown a few miles, near Rosenbaltt Stadium--where the College World Series is played.

Steak/Prime Rib places:
downtown is Omaha Prime (fairly spendy though) and I have been told there is a new place called The Chophouse which I have not been to yet, but have been told it is very good (don't know about $$$ though.)

South of downtown is Johnny's Cafe (low on ambiance, but good--this is the restaurant from the beginning of the movie About Schmidt)

Midtown--go to Gorat's. Very low on ambiance, but Warren Buffett's favorite restaurant.

My favorite place in town is Brother Sebastians, but it is a little further west. (about 118th and Pacific--ask for directions from someone if you go here, it's back off the road a bit on the end of a shopping center.)

That's most of the run-down. People mainly drink, eat, and watch football in Omaha! It's warmed up a bit this week, but it will still probably be in the 30's/40's at the most, so cold for a Texan! Let me know if you want any more info.

Husker - you should have sent him to some notoriously gay bar in Omaha. Now that would have been funny. Maybe they don't have any.

Done. You bring the Lone Star for the road. I'll buy a pickup truck just for the trip.

Ha! I love that place.

No problem.

I also forgot to mention--especially since you will be there for a week--you will have to try a Runza. Fast food joint from Nebraska. Kind of like a beef pocket--bun filled with ground beef, cabbage, and onions. Supposedly its old Czech or German food, but the closest thing I've had to it was something that a Finnish girl cooked me once. They also sell these at the Husker games. (Lots of people who aren't from here aren't too crazy about them for some reason, but you have to try the local fare!)

By the way, I was told once that I was one of three people keeping the Shiner Bock on tap there. Even after I sold my house up the street, they still had it, but I came back into town after being gone for a year--no more Shiner.
