Wonder if many of you realize that the Green Bay Packers' GM is a SMU Football Letterman. Ted Thompson was an All SWC Linebacker for us in the 70's. There is a story on him on the ESPN Website today.

A very little known trivia fact about Ted Thompson... in 1980, his sixth year as a Houston Oiler, Thompson did something never done before, or since. The Oilers were led by Kenny Stabler that year, and they played the New York Jets in Shea Stadium in late November. The Jets jumped out to 21-0 lead.
In the third quarter the Oilers lost Earl Campbell (knee) and Stabler's favorite receiver, TE Dave Casper (concussion). In the fourth quarter, still trailing 0-21, Snake Stabler began to get hot.
He drove the Oilers down field for a TD. 6-21. Only problem, the Oilers kicker, Toni Fritsch, was hurt on the opening kickoff. The only other person on the team with FG kicking experience was # 51, backup linebacker/special teams player... Ted Thompson.
Thompson walked on the field, and kicking old school... ie: straight on, nailed the extra point. 7-21. After a three and out by the Jets Stabler again drove the Oilers to another TD, a pass to TE Mike Barber. Thompson again nailed the XP. 14-21.
After another failed Jets drive the Oilers took over at their own 32. Stabler dropped back and threw a bomb to WR/TE, and ex-Jet, Richard Caster. 68 yards later the score was now 20-21. Thompson came on and drove the XP through. However, an unsportsmanlike penalty on Houston set the ball back 15 yards, making this XP more like a 35 yard FG. Thompson nailed it again! 21-21.
The Jets finally got something together and drove the length of the field in just 3 plays, the TD a swing pass to a RB for over 50 yards. 28-21.
Stabler took the field and drove the Oilers goal ward yet again. In a fourth quarter that would see Snake hit on 13 of 15 for over 250 yards and 4 TD's, he threw the final pass to ex-Jet Caster again. 27-28.
Now the pressure was really on Thompson. With only seconds remaining, he calmly drove his 4th XP home and tied the game, 28-28.
The Jets won the coin toss in OT and drove down to kick a FG, winning the game 31-28. However, this day was filled with history:
Stabler threw for 388 yards. His highest ever total.
Stabler threw 4, 4th quarter TD's. The first time in NFL history that had ever been done. Since then, only Joe Montana (1990) and Peyton Manning (2003) have tied that mark.
Thompson is the only non-kicker to successfully kick more than one XP in a game, going 4 for 4.
Just some crazy history/trivia for ya. Oh... I also have this game on DVD. I probably re-watch this at least once or twice a year. Very crazy game.
