Oklahoman article about our new hire.

Postby jimmieho » Sat Jan 12, 2008 8:35 pm

I find this article from the Oklahoman a little offensive. I hadn't seen a reference to it on PonyFans and thought some might want to respond to Berry Tramel, the author of this master piece.

They point fingers in this article and continue trying to keep SMU down when many other schools have since been caught with as bad, or worse, NCAA violations, and been given a slap on the hand (OU).
It's too bad the Oklahoman can't write supportive articles about the new direction and new head coach.

So what if the "little guys" want to pony up for a top 25 coach. Celebrate with us instead of continuing to remind us of the past and trying to keep us in our place.

I hope some of you respond to Berry Tramel of the Choklahoman with a little Mustang luv.

These days even college's little guys can spend millions on football coaches.

SMU president R. Gerald Turner, right, will be paying new football coach June Jones $2 million a year. But, did the school overpay to get him?

Great Places to Work By Berry Tramel

The Oklahoman

In December 1999, LSU lured Nick Saban from Michigan State with a $1.25 million per year package. Steve Spurrier was making $2 million a year at Florida, but he was an institution in Gator Nation. The Saban contract drew oohs and aahs.

Here's what Barry Switzer said: "The scary part is, maybe 30 years from now, they'll be getting $4 million. And Spurrier will be sitting around thinking, ‘I missed out on it.'â€

About what I expect out of Oklahoma. Why doesn't Texas fall into the Gulf of Mexico? Because Oklahoma sucks!

technically, the school isn't paying $2MM, it's the boosters. that's the only way WE can compete with the big boys.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Barry Switzer and OU never payed players, right.

Guys, you have to realize something. Nothing is ever said in a positive manner in the Oklahoma media regarding college football unless it's about OU. Even Oklahoma State gets crapped on up there. We can't let little Barry (nice pic, [deleted]) get us down.

We paid for an awesome coach. Can't wait to see him succeed here!

You make it sound like the University is broke. SMU's endowment is $1.3 Billion; however, most of this money is committed funds and not unrestricted. More unrestricted gifts would make a difference, but then the donor might not have his name on a specific building.

Ask Mike Gundy what he thinks of The Oklahoman. I don't regularly read it, but many Oklahoma State fans claim a serious OU bias.

I like having SMU featured in an article in the Oklahoma paper.....even if it is a little negative towards SMU. I always thought SMU should recruit harder in Oklahoma. Oklahoma high schools turn out a lot of great college football players.

In the world of college football, SMU is a "kid" and BCS national championship contenders are "men."

TAKE GUNDY'S ADVICE AND GO AFTER THE MEN, OKLAHOMAN!

In the world of BCS bowl winners, OU is a bridesmaid.
