Phil never learned how to adjust his schemes to match the abilities of his players. Schumann was a master at doing that.

Yes, that would explain why an 0-10 TCU team ran all over us in 97 his first year on the job. Their only win of the season against our master DC.
Hiring that cat would take the wind right out of JJ's sail.

Schumann would be great! Before PB we couldn't win a game because as well as our defense played, the offense could not score a point. Now that our offense is good, our defense cannot make a stop. JJ should improve our already solid offense and Schumann could improve our porous defense. Hopefully the new special teams coach works out as I do not want to discover new ways of losing a game. I thought we pretty much covered the bases last season.

Isn't Shumann currently the DC at UAB?

Not that it really matters, but I think if you go back and look at the rankings of our defense during the Cavan years, you will find that they were highly ranked relative to most non-BCS schools. In 1997, we lost to TCU 21-18, hardly getting runover. We lost that because Cavan held Donte Womack out of the game. That year we beat Arkansas 31-9...I'm sure our defense had nothing to do with that.

FYI: Eric is not available.
Jan. 5, 2007
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB head football coach Neil Callaway is continuing the process of assembling his staff, announcing Friday the hiring of Eric Schumann, Tyson Helton and Ervin Lewis to the Blazers' program.
Schumann, who will serve as UAB's defensive coordinator and coach the safeties, brings a significant amount of experience to the Blazers. Most recently, Schumann has held the position of defensive coordinator at Tulane, serving in that position since January, 2002. Schumann also spent five seasons as the defensive coordinator at SMU while coaching the defensive backs.
While coaching at SMU, the Mustangs led the Western Athletic Conference in defense in 2001 and ranked No. 22 nationally. SMU was 30th in the NCAA statistics in rushing defense, yielding just 122 yards per game, and ranked 35th in pass efficiency defense.

When I was pretending to be a Division 1 football player on the scout team, getting beat up daily by Bordano, Gedwed, and Jason Evans, Coach Schumann, without question, made the most impact on me, and in my opinion, on the team as a whole. He is a great coach, with a perfect balance of intensity and respect for his players. When he spoke, people listened. UAB is lucky to have him.
Let me explain something to you. I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me.
