Hire WHOEVER JJ wants as Def Coord!

Postby couch 'em » Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:14 pm

The man is far more qualified to pick a Def. Coord. than anyone on this board.

Since when did that become a criteria for stating opinions on this board? Anyone, including myself, who makes a suggestion for a hire, a uniform design or a policy change or anything else along those lines is crazy if they actually think the athletic department is going to act on those suggestions. On the other hand, hell froze over and we hired JJ...so maybe there is a chance. :D

JJ DEF COORD

Postby Cardinal Puff » Mon Jan 14, 2008 7:07 pm

In JJ's football world the defensive coordinator is the eunuch at the orgy.

JJ wants Greg McMackin to be his defensive coordinator...but Hawaii will probably pick him for their head coaching job. If McMackin is NOT picked for UH's head coaching spot, SMU fans will love him as their DC.

My guess is that Jeff Reinbold is JJ's Plan B. Awesome recruiter, great guy, lots of experience. But JJ won't offer Reinbold the job until he's sure he can't get McMackin...McMackin will be interviewed tomorrow by Hawaii and UH should hopefully announce their head coach on Wednesday.

JJ's best friend (Artie Wilson) and many others JJ is close to are on the UH search committe for JJ's replacement, plus JJ and McMackin have been talking regularly. I think JJ will know very quickly if he has to go to Reinbold.

Is Reinebold qualified to be a DC? I know he is a great recruiter and believe he has ties to Texas..but we need someone that can actually be a solid DC to turn around our D

Here's what Jones said about the Hawaii coaches. I thought Reinebold had decided to stay; apparently, he has not made his decision.

_______________

Although he is leaving UH for a new opportunity at SMU, Jones said he will continue to try to do what he can for the Warriors. That includes endorsing Greg McMackin to replace him, even though Jones had assumed McMackin would join him in Dallas.

"We talked, talked to him again today, and met with him. I want what's best for Hawaii," Jones said. "I'll survive and find another coach if he does not come that will allow us to win and do what we need to do at SMU. I have great confidence in that."

Jones said he will hold the Mustangs defensive coordinator position open for McMackin should he not get the UH job, but he can only do so for a few days.

"I told Greg I had to make some decisions," Jones said. "So he's going to have to make a judgment call on if he thinks he's going to get it or not."

At least three of Jones' UH assistants are joining his SMU staff. Dennis McKnight (offensive line, special teams), Dan Morrison (quarterbacks) and Wes Suan (running backs) were scheduled to leave for Dallas yesterday.

Defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold is another possibility to join the Mustangs, but he was still weighing things yesterday. Strength coach Mel deLaura will likely remain in Hawaii due to family considerations.

Get kevin Lempa! He used to Hawaii's DC but his family couldn't handle the islands, so he took the DBs job at BC. After O'Brien left, he took a similar position at Maryland. The folks at Maryland think he's a remarkable coach and many want him to be the next DC as their current coordinator is in a very tenuous situation.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Apparently, Jones passed him over for the DC position at Hawaii when Glanville left:

______________

Jeff Reinebold can't say who will be the defensive coordinator to replace Jerry Glanville at Hawaii. No one can -- officially, anyway.

But he can say who it isn't.

Reinebold, the Warriors' defensive line coach, was pegged as a possibility to become the DC when Glanville left for Portland State last month.

But Reinebold said yesterday he is no longer a candidate for the job.

Greg McMackin, the UH defensive coordinator in 1999, appears ready to resume his former post.

The position is still officially open, but with Reinebold out of the running, McMackin is clearly the top candidate.

Any chance Jerry Glanville would leave Portland State to be our DC & ASST. Head Coach at SMU ? Great DC and could get more exposure as a potential Div. 1 HC in the future.
